Hope this helps,
Jonathan.

yes i see the firing order and the numbers on the cap. I just didnt see the numbers on the cylinders.
Only other thing i need to know for sure is if 0/1 is TDC.
Im sure its out of time.

You should be able to read the numbers/letters correctly oriented on the harmonic balancer from the front of the engine. If the harmonic balancer is on backwards, you will have spark, compression, and fuel, but not all three at the right time. Your car will not run.

Except that this car starts each am.

Is that "am" PST, CST or EST? ;)

First off I want to thank every one for playing. But unfortunately there can only be one winner. And that prize needs to go to stepson with the reversed balancer. Second prize goes to every one that mentioned bad grounds. There were lots of them . End result is I was able to get it running enough to sell it . I'm sure the new owner will be starting his thread shortly so stay tuned for part 2 of the 928 game.

Really? Does that warrant unloading it? I don't understand why the HB is a big problem. I have read several threads about this...are the mechanics out there that dumb??? What damage occurs when this happens?

stepson 06-10-2012 11:53 AM

Airtek,
Maybe Sundown was a dealer needing to move a car. Either way, hopefully the new owner will take a shine to the car and take care of it. I don't mind helping either way, but it would have been nice to know who you're dealing with.

There is no damage at all with the HB on backwards on a non-interference engine. It just won't run. It is maddening. You have fuel, spark and compression, but not all at the right time. To put the HB back on correctly is just the same as redoing a TB job all over again. The TB has to come off and the cam gears have to be reset in conjuction with the reoriented HB.

I see.... To me, anyway, if no damage done, seems like he would have been excited to have it fixed....perhaps your right, and he was looking to unload it anyway.

There wasn't any damage to the engine from the HB. It was just the last straw in a very long list of problems the car had. I bought it with the intent of fixing it up to keep. But After realizing the extent of the work needed I knew it was more of a project then I wanted.
I didn't unload it . I was made an offer for it from a fellow pelican who had been reading my posts from the start and was well aware of the cars problems. I was well pleased with my self I got to hear it run. In my mind I won. Thanks to every one here .

Good deal sundown, no offense meant, just curious....as I have found, as have many others, it takes a lot to keep these things going, like any old car.

Jeeps (early Chrysler Cherokees / grand in particular) come to mind as vehicles that require a lot of "constant tinkering"...boy do I have some stories there....always something broken....

+1 to Airtek's comments above, Sundown.
928 Projects are not for the faint of heart and can be very defeating. Most people never realize their limitations. It is very good that you realized that you had come to the end of your road with this particular car. But, Is there is no greater sound than that of an engine you have been working on starting?

In my mind, you won also.

Good Luck to you and maybe we'll see you down the road.

oh yeah im hooked big time, I will own aother one . But if im going to put in that much time , money and effort I want it to be a model more worthy of the investment.
