A true WTF degree of neglect
So while attempting to repair a leaky fuel line ( which whipped me according to the large pool of gas in my garage floor ) i noticed the reservoir for the Atf was completely caked with filth to the point you couldn't even tell how much fluid was present so I wipe it off to discover that there is in fact, nearly none! So being that I was down there anyway I got the old man to rig up my fluid pump and run the hose to me through the wheel well and we filled it ... then we filled it again...then again ...then again and finally it was full after putting in an entire quart! After we re-installed the tank I noticed my fuel leak was now worse so I jack the car up again to see if I can find the leak and when I do I notice the reservoir is half empty again (this explains why the car was shifting ...oddly the only time I've driven it since I bought it) So I've decided that when the car is back to form my first road trip will be to each of the previous owners houses where I will simply knock on the door and ask how the transmission was behaving when they sold the car, and for everyone who says anything other than "Perfect" or some other positive, I'm going to then drag them into their front yard and whoop an A$$! All the while the "Kick some ass" song from the end of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back will be playing on the stereo while the car watches it vengeance being met out! I HAVE SPOKEN!
PS the guy I bought it from gets a pass, since he never actually drove the car more than 150 feet or so while he owned it , but starting with the guy before him ITS ON!!! |
Remember only to check the level with the car running and warmed-up! And you need to go through all the gears between each fill to make sure the reading is true...
So maybe hold out on the vengeance-tour for a bit? ;) |
Good Point its been a while since I've had anything the had an automatic gearbox, I'll admit I totally forgot about that ! Well I guess now I've gotta hope I dont have to kick my own ass!
|
So you are going to kick someones ass because the transmission fluid level was low? You know, Transmission pans leak around the seal. I doubt the previous owner had anything to do with it..

Metro,
where are you located? Just curious. Be aware that the tranny holds more ATF than the reservoir allows for. When the cars sit for a while whithout being run, the ATF migrates from the torque convertor into the pan and into the reservoir. When the reservoir gets to capacity, it will run out of the fill cap vent and onto the floor. I really don't understand why a car would sit that long (long enough for this to happen), but it does happen. That being said, I don't understand either why someone would own a car that they no plan for servicing. I also don't understand why Porsche would make it difficult to 1) check the ATF level and 2) add ATF to the system. With the advent of the S4, a one way valve was added to allow a hose to pump in ATF without removing the fill cap. Much easier to fill, but still has to be checked while under the car. Just think before you go whupping anybody, those unknowledgeable PO's are what allowed you to acquire your 928 for cheap. Thank them and get to work. :) |

I'm in Tennessee to answer your question, and the car had been sitting in my dads garage for a week when I found the reservoir nearly empty (no pool under it either) I filled it yesterday afternoon and as of this evening still no sign of leakage as a matter of fact the reservoir is once again only half full so I assume the tranny is still thirsty it kills me that people will buy a car like this then abuse it. I ran a carfax on it when I got it and that combined with the service records if found in the car showed the original owner took excellent care of the car but after he sold it the only records of the car were tagging and re registrations at time of sell until i got it with an approximate 22000 miles put on the car between the original owner selling it and me buying it! It really wasnt that big a deal to add fluid I just went to wal-mart and bought a $7 hand pump and some atf then put one hose in the reservoir and the other in the bottle of fluid and started pumping (actually my dad did the pumping ) but I really feel like if a person could afford to buy the car , then they could afford to buy a damn jack and some jack stands and the stuff I bought and TAKE CARE OF THE CAR! and You know you're right I am glad they were all numb skulls cause at least now the car is in the hands of somebody that actually gives a crap about it... ...but they should still have their butts kicked ! |
Metro,
Your engine runs. Correct? The reason I ask is that you can't fill the tranny properly wihout the engine running. Even when you drain it totally, you can only put about 4 quarts in it before you have to start the engine to put in the other 5 or so. I just cant remember if your car runs. |
yes my car does run (but not now my fuel return line is leaking badly) it just isn't driveable, but will idle when able

You might as well change the trans-axle fluid (not ATF) while you are at this job. I think it takes a 17mm allen to open fill and drain plugs. OPEN the FILL first. If you drain and cannot open the fill you are screwed! PS. I bought the Allen socket set at Autozone for about $11. Good luck. |
Oh yes! Definitely fix the fuel leak first.

They may have had it changed at some place, and didnt get the right amount in it. A low fluid level doesnt mean an owner doesnt deserve to own the car. You are making too much out of low fluid level. Move on. You said the reservoir was caked, correct? Then isnt it possible the cap was lose and it was leaking out of that?
Quote: "I'm angry with is an apparently gigantic degree of negligence" Do you have anger issues? When i see one of my car's tranny fluid is low, i think "Oh, Ill put some in" Not "IM GOING TO GO KICK SOMEONES ASS AND MAKE IT BETTER" The damage is already done. Get over it. |
I am repairing the fuel leak this weekend , I already repaired several leaking places I just missed one by about 2 inches (the end of the return line was rusted through in several places in the last foot or so) it was this project in particular that I was working on when I noticed the atf reservoir and for the record I have far better things to do than waste time kicking someones ass , I was just venting, I would very much rather spend that time working on the car .

Damn, and I thought somebody was going to open up a tall can of whoop a$$ on an internet forum. One time I heard this guy talking smack to another dude and he said "I'm gonna kick your *ss, and they'll call the cops. I'll go to jail, get out, and come whip your *ss again". lol Funny stuff.
By the way many 928 transmissions leak after prolonged sitting. It's one of the symptoms of being unused. So, maybe you should blame the last owner who didn't drive the car more than 150ft. Maybe it's not anyone's fault other than Ben Bernanke and Timothy Geithner's. ah ha ha ha ha I can't afford gas to drive my cars every week. |
