Porsche Project -
Hey Landseer, I know that you may feel a little disappointed after finding some additional damage on your new Porsche project - but don’t be discouraged. A while back I had picked up a very nice 930 that had left the road at a high rate of speed. Although it was banged up pretty good, it still appeared to have come through the accident fairly well intact. Later it turned out not only to be twisted front to back, but the body had a distinct diamond shape corner to corner. It was probably repairable but I chose to swap out everything to another body.
I found out later that the guy who sold me the car was well aware of the structural issues. As I had initially attempted to locate a frame shop to square up the body, I crossed paths with a guy that the original owner had already contacted. The seller had held me up for more than I planned to spend at the time but I’d given in when he told me that the estimates he’d been given didn’t show any sub frame damage. The car eventually turned out real nice - it just included a lot more time and labor than I’d planned. Good Luck, Michael :) |
Thanks Michael,
That must have been difficult, but you made it work. This car was advertised for parts, so the real mission was always to secure the G28-11 gearbox. Turned out to have an LSD inside, so that was a major plus. Anyway, I've got a donor and 3 potential recipients of lots of stuff. Will probably try to find a home for the 32V engine. Going to warm it and do a compression check sometime soon and get some good video of it running. |
It doesn't look like a throw away to me at all, unless it has rust anyway.
You need a frame guy to straighten it, not that expensive if you find someone honest. There have been much worse repaired than what i am seeing there. You also can download the factory repair manual for 20 bucks which gives a detailed instruction to replace the rear quarter. |
It does seem like a shame as 85% of the body looks downright beautiful and the interior is stunning. On the other hand there's a point of no return where it makes no financial sense to save a car. Personally I'd check into every available option to save it before deciding to part it. Worst case is she'll keep a lot of other 928s on the road.
