I have the same problem. I can't go into reverse unless I shut off the engine and first is a struggle unless I time it right coming up to a stop light with slight pressure. It will pop in at about 5 mph. If I force it sooner, it will grind and if I come to a complete stop before I get it into first...it's much harder....I love it's uniqueness...

The clutch feels good. I am thinking that it is either the throw-out bearing or the synchros in the transmission.

Can you go into reverse with the car off?

I'd like to know someone's opinion on this as well before I start pulling things apart.

Guys, i had very inconsistent shifting and a hard time getting out of first. I took a few easy days to remove the exhaust and then clutch access bell.

I replaced the ball cup (located at the top of the throw out bearing lever)
I did it without removal of the clutch pack. Be sure to wear a mask and blow all the dust out of the clutch pack (factory manual advises)
Anyway, replacing this cheap ball cup really fixed the shifting issue i was having. I still have slow syncros but they are all that way.
