Uh oh, hood release broke..

The PN 928-511-173-0270B-M260 housing where the cable is held broke just now when I returned home from a drive to check the fluids, etc. I didn't pull excessively hard and the cable hasn't felt stiff or had any resistance in the past. 32,000 miles on my 86.5 928S.

Anybody have experience changing out th is part, tips to be aware of or avoid? The hood is up now, I'm afraid to close it and thus can't move the car. But it appears the part can be changed out even with hood closed. My apologies, I haven't invested in a shop manual up til now.

Mine broke just the other day, must have been the cold weather making the lubricant stiff.

It's not a very hard part to change, and you can close the hood. If you need to open it again, before you change the part, lay down in front of the car, look up through the grill, and squeeze the mechanism with a pair of pliers. The 928 engine compartment is very easy to get into.

Owning a 928 is risky business - but sometimes you just gotta say "what the fudge".

Same here, mine broke last week. You can close your hood, the cable release will still work just fine. T

Thanks guys. I need to move the car today, so good to know.

$7 part from our sponsor, how refreshingly inexpensive!

You can still use the linkage by removing the lever from the recess and pulling it toward the rear of the car. BTDT..

Ya, I had a pair of vice grips hooked to mine for months. Would just dangle down there until i needed the hood open.

make sure to lubricate the hood latch and the hood catch ,
DONT lubricate the cable.

To remove the old hood latch quadrant,
move the carpet up,
then fit an allen wrench through the small holes in the top cover,
unscrew the 2 bolts and the plastic will come free, along with the bolts as they will be captured.
. Remove the top cover carefully,
and catch the bolts ,
remove the handle and fit it into the new housing,
install the bolts then the top cover so they are captured.
fit to the chassis with a few turns on each bolt to walk them into place

HF (used to anyway) sell a little apparatus for motorcycle guys to clean and lubricate cables. Its a small "block" with a rubber sleeve portion that the end of the cable goes in, and it has port for a spray can of stuff to be squirted in. First some cleaner, wiggle cable, then a shot of some kind of cable lubricant. Put a rag on the other end to catch the junk.

Now on amazon it looks like.

Dont lubricate the cable it has a teflon liner and is self lubricated ,

adding most types of lubricants may swell the liner and cause the cable to bind.

Lubricate the latch and catch, and make sure the catch is centered into the latch assembly,
this will also reduce the pull needed to open the hood
