Reverse makes my 928 go forward
 

So I shift into reverse, let off the clutch, and start going forward. I can shift through all the gears, and the car low and behold, also goes forward. This means I essentially have no reverse.

I drove the car a few times up and down the street and everything worked fine (incl. reverse). Then all of a sudden, no reverse, and like I said it makes the car go forward.

I did however go up a small uphill driveway to turn around, as I was rolling up, I shifted into reverse and when I left off the clutch there was a short grind of the gears. I quickly put the clutch back in, let the engine rev down, and I'm pretty sure this is when the reverse stopped working. Can't be sure since it all happened pretty fast.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

It sounds like linkage. I would try to fumble around with the gear shift and see if you can figure out the spot where reverse engages. Maybe the linkage just slipped out of place. I know the 928 manual shifter can wear out and get stuck in gears, or not engage into gears. If you can't figure it out you will probably need to go into the shifter mechanism to look for wear or broken bushings.

Had a similar problem a year or so back, turned out to be the plastic ball cup on the front end of the linkage. You may get lucky and just be able to pop it back on if it is the ball cup.

Had the same problem. It was the U joint that connects the shifting rod to the transaxle. The rubber had worn away and there was too much wiggle room in there.

Turn your seat around.

So forgive the ignorance, but for all these issues I need to get the car on a lift or ramp right? This is my first car project and while I'm good with my hands, I don't really know where to start even though you guys pretty much spelled it out for me :-) Any specifics you can add?

When I pulled out the shifter boot and the insulation, the connection from the shifter to the linkage rods (?if that's what you call them? :) seems fine. I can move it from R all the way through to 5 putting it into gear at each one.

Where should I be looking?

maybe see diagrams/study (1) for how from the stick down through to clutch slave cyl will give idea what things look and are called. then while instruction answers ,patience, and searching through the like subject/s come along, youll know how to relate/faster fix to the answers to your- ?s.

To retract, the part I was referring to is actually called a "coupling" I think. It has a pointy allen screw that sets the coupling in place. My screw was rigged up by the PO and was not seating properly, to add to the loosy-goosy coupling. Like Ms. Fausty suggested, the Workshop Manual has a how-to in fixin this. It's sort of difficult -you have to turn the coupling counterwise and hold it in position while trying to tighten the 13 mm bolt at the same time.
