Who has/doe's drive their car in the winter?i.e snow?

Hello.
Without a 928 I wish to keep hanging on. Questions I ask are to some and myself but are now turned to this forum.
I wish to stay afflicted and belong.

Anyway.
I was wondering who has driven their 928 in ALL SEASONS. Winter is especially what I'm asking about.
Not talking about Arizona, or Palm Springs winter. Real Winter. National Geographic Winter Weather!

THE SNOW.

When I got booted out of my own house , all I had left was the 88 928. It served me and my kids.
Although I did lose my front spoiler on a bad winter storm.
It went through deep snow and would start as long as it wasn't minus 20 degrees C.
No such thing as a block heater. Attempted to try it but magnets are no good for aluminum.
Put on Michelin's m xxx 3's.
Good tires.
BUT when the PSD/LSD -is it?- can't remember-8 year Divorce has- made me forgetful of a many of things..
..the vehicle would sway and wake me right up when it would kick in.
BUT I have driven it for at least 3 winters.
AND IT WASN"T ALL THAT BAD !

You and your experiences ? I am very curious of your feelings of the machine and your thoughts.
They did have 6" wide mags as an option for the car after-all.

Well, I'm in Presque Isle which is above the 48th parallel (46' N). We average about 140-160 inches of snow per winter. Temperatures would be considered frigid even by Chicago standards. They don't use salt up here, they use some kind of brine. Really corrosive from what the truckers tell. The moose love it. You'll see them out on the road licking the stuff.
I NEVER drive my 928 in the winter. I winterize, and she sleeps indoors.

I drive it occasionally in winter if roads are dry and free of salt. I seldom even drive it in rain! My car is original and looks original, paint and all and I wish to keep it that way. I drive my 4x4 Expedition in winter. Everything garage kept in heated garage.

I tried once (in the snow) when I had to move it to my friends garage. I got stuck in my relatively flat driveway then had to pull it up the slight incline to the road. Three Scary miles late it was in another garage. That's the extent of it for me

I'll drive in the winter as long as there's no salt on the roads.

What is this Snow substance you speak of driving in? I believe it's almost non existant here. That being said, if I still lived where it occured, my 928 would be garage bound for the duration

I had to drive my Carrera at one point to work when i lived in a borough of Philly named Manayunk. It is as hilly as San Francisco but not nearly as nice.
I put cheap Cooper All Seasons on it and that car would chug through a foot of snow, not exaggerating.
I would drop the clutch in first gear and at idle it would chug up any steep hill. Great traction and torque.

But i do avoid snow due to the salt they spread around in my area.

I used to take out the Cayenne in the fresh powder (blizzard conditions and push the envelope with PSM turned off), that is a real rally car in the snow with the right rubber.

Once the first snow or ice hits, mine get tucked in for a long winters nap. I won't even take them out in the spring until after the first good rain (not just a sprinkle) washes the roads off. Done this with all my sports cars thru the years. And an FYI, during the winter, even though the roads are clear a few days after a snow, that salt still sticks around a lot longer than you think and just gets ground down to a powder which will find it's way into the nooks & crannies. Add water and corrosion troubles could begin. I know not everybody has the advantage of multiple vehicles.

Nokian hakka 2 "studded" no LSD.
Unbelievable in the snow. I took a dozen or so trips from Boston to Mad River Glen with no problems. I can't imagine the car with a good diff.
I have a hot water pressure washer at work which takes care of the salt.

Mine goes to sleep for the Winter, and stays in the garage....I get tons of snow each winter, and the roads (in my neck of the woods are meant for 4x4's only!

That's why I have a Subaru Outback, and a Honda Civic....

However, I'd love to see a 928 with a set of these puppies!!!!

928 In The Snow

I live in the Chicago area, and have moved my car a little during the winter. My garage area is up a small incline, with any snow at all, I have to back down the street and take a run at it. Now I will admit that I do not have snow or all season tires. It is actually worse in the snow than my Tacoma pickup which is light at the rear.
I remember reading the "Project 928" book where they mentioned winter testing of the 928 in Siberia; they must have used chains, and had the trunk loaded down.

I was stuck at work and it snowed (3 inches). Took forever to get home as the car was not very tolerant of much gas pedal, and more people in front of me crashing.

It is a well balanced car that slides predictably, as long as your speed is kept under control. I do not recommend driving in the snow, not because of the car, but because of the idiots in disposible cars that drive like its summer during the snow storms.

I drove my 88 for 3 winters in a row.
From home to work and back the commute was an eye opening 102 miles. About 70 of those were on the highway in the dead of winter.

I saw many many vehicles in the ditch over the years. I only survived because, in the vehicle I never became complacent . The car would kick back if you did something stupid.
Anyway, it made me a better driver.

- like anything else...just forget it , if you don't have very good winter tires.
