Short Shift kit/Front Shift Coupler
My 86 928S is in need of a Front Shift Ball Coupler Replacement.
I am sweating at the thought of getting the car up on stands and wrestling with a piece of exhaust that would need to be removed and such as described in the replacement instructions I found online. I read the installation instructions for a Short Shift Kit on the 928srus website and with this kit it appears the front shift rod is disconnected and unused. Can someone give me some insight into this kit such as where to purchse it and any pros and cons that might relate? I could not find anything other than installation instructions on the 928srus site. Thanks Much, Dave |
Dave,
That's a pretty good setup. I've watched the install of one. Fairly straightforward, and it shifted pretty well. (my preference is the long original shifters). Also refered to as the Lizard shift kit, after the guy on rennlist that first put it together. Call the folks on the phone to talk about it. Basically, as you said, the front rod is disconnected and can be strapped near the front of TT so it doesnt rattle around with a big zip tie. The shifter straddles the tunnel opening. You kinda center it per instructions and mark the tunnel to drill a few holes. As I recall, the only complaint was lack of a template for locating holes. Minor issue. Some links. Video link is gone. Bronze bushings, a separate project by Jadz for the back coupler, didn't pan out though. (I still run a set though, not worried about the little vibration.) Dave,
I'm in the same boat as you (I posted my question on Rennlist), the front ball cup failed on me yesterday. Luckily, the trans was in 3rd gear and I managed to get home. Apparently, 928srus is the only company that sells the "Lizard" short shift kit. I called today and left a message asking about price. That will determine whether I get the kit or fight with tight spaces underneath and try to replace it with a stock part. Hugo |
Short Shifter
Hugo,
Did you get the short shifter (lizard) Was it easy to install? Thanks Karl |
Not yet, been playing a bit of phone tag but hope to place the order this week. In the meantime, I was fixing the shift coupler on my 911.

Shot shift kit
I'm not getting any call backs. I want to order now.
I am not sure what to do. I have have put 200 miles on it. I can't wait to start driving it. Have you talked to Roger? Thanks Karl |
I heard Roger was out of town...but he does have staff there....keep trying...they are reputable.

Short Shifter
Thanks.
I have dealt with guys who sell muscle car parts and classic motorcycle parts. Some are really really slow and don't seem to care. I feel better with your thumbs up on Roger and staff. Karl |
Karl,
I got a call back today and placed my order. Hugo |
Me tooooo!
Can't wait Karl |
Hugo, Karl,
How did the install of your Lizard Short Shift kit go? Also, what was the cost of the unit? I'm ready to go with my conversion. Thanks, Dave |
I've installed it but have a problem in that I cannot get 1st or reverse. That is, i can't move the shifter far enough to the left to get into the first/reverse gate.
I spent several hours under the car today playing with the shift coupler to no avail. The bushings on the coupler are in pretty good shape, I doubt the small amount of play is the cause of the problem. I'm stumped. Hugo |
It should work. Good news is that you have fore/aft range.
Did you re-clock the splined connection of the shift coupler and the shift actuation rod? Reclocking that should help. Show pictures of the install in the cockpit if you can, also. |
Good grief, seems like the things are timed internationally to go out, my shifter ball cup failed the day before yesterday...setting in front of the auto parts store..stuck in first gear!.Ball cup is ordered and should be here tomorrow. Anyone know how much the lizard shifter costs..I could not find a listing on their website?
