The term 'corporate welfare bums' has been attributed to Canada's David Lewis (1972). A politician and Rhodes Scholar, Lewis was an avowed anti-communist and he played a major role in removing communist influence from the labour movement in this country. The idea analogizes corporate subsidies (money grants, tax breaks, or other special favorable treatment) to welfare payments for the poor. The idea has resurfaced with a vengeance after Catepillar moved its locomotive plant to a 'right to work' state after benefitting from the receipt of billions to develop patentable development in this country. To be fair, Cat said that they would stay if workers agreed to a 50 percent reduction in hourly wages. They declined.
Don't get me wrong, entrepreneurism is in my blood; however, I don't believe it should come at the expense of others be it in the form of low wages, poor working conditions or fleeting-capital. To quote Forbes' magazine Thought Of The Day (Oct 26): “ All men who are really great can afford to be really human and to be shown so. ”— Gamaliel Bradford
Anyways, I thank the Gods of Capitalism for my Porsches but not for the Pinto that nearly incinerated my friend. (Otherwise, they were great cars!!!)
