What if...

Porsche decided to make a 928 2.0, which uses the same shape and general idea of our beloved, but they use modern materials and updated technology and methods for increased performance in EVERY thing about the car.

what do you think it would be like?

Would it bother anyone if they took out the back seats, and put the v8 in the back, with the transaxle in the front? I thought about this because i saw a video talking about the Koenigsegg Agera R. It mentioned how it was a twin turbo, 32v, v8. It was also in the back though.

It would be like the price of a house, check out the panamera for an example.

I was looking at the ad for the 89 GT with 19k miles recently on ebay, dealer sticker in 89 was $79k. Around that time I bought my first house for a similar amount.

Everybody thinks more HP, but I think the key thing to improve on a 928 is reliability and cost of ownership with maybe a "modest" increase in power to around 300 rwhp.

I'm not saying slap as much horse power in it as we can, i'm actually saying what you are, with better materials and know how, it seems like they could make it into a really durable car. The car will gain power just through any tweaks or changes that they would add after seeing and knowing what problems it had.

Alot has changed sinse the 80's and early 90's with cars. I honestly think car companies should do something like this. Bring back an old car, but a modern version.

Except for ford and chevy lol

But they could increase performance not just by adding horse power, but cutting weight too.

look at lotus for example

Like you said, It would be the cost of a house. No ones buying that expensive of a car with only 300hp. It would have to be 500hp min.. just to sell because it would be competing with this...

Its a problem not unique to Porsche or even cars, its very difficult to make an elite product without ALL of the "hot" features in the market.

OTOH for those who had a chance to look over one of the recent less than 20k miles cars, or Dan's stroker S4 that has had a full restore treatment, what we are asking is available now, for a price.

Considering how long the Panamera has been out, I thought we would have seen a new 928 by 2012. Plenty of cool concept pictures floating around.

I will say that if I'm going to drop $175,000 on a car it sure as hell better not be in the 300 HP class of a V6 CamEro. I pretty much want a car that will mop the road with 99.8% of the cars on this planet. Chop two doors off the monster Panamera Turbo S and they're more than half way there. They have an awesome base and just need to make it happen.

A V6 300 HP model will need to be less than $60K and I don't see that happening with Porsche. It'll most likely be ~$80K and I believe most people in the market who can't afford the top end will wait for a V8 or Turbo to depreciate in a few years and buy used.
Cheapest V6 Panamera is close to $80K. A Kia Optima SX will give it run for the money in every way shape and form at a cost of $27K. It also has a drive train warranty over double of what Porsche offers. Sorry, but I don't want Kia performance for $80K.
I see Panameras all the time but have yet to see a V6 model in person. Currently there are about 20 Panameras for sale locally to me and I only see two that are a V6 so I don't think Porsche is selling a lot of them. If you're rich, you'll go all out and if you're average the V6 will either still be out of your price range or you'll wait for a V8/turbo to drop in price and buy used.

Now if Porsche could offer this with 600 HP @ $120,000 or less with a 100K mile drive train warranty...I would be all over it.

When (if) I win the EuroJackpot lottery, like some other danish dude did a week ago ($23.300.000), I'll have Porsche make one of those for me! And restore my old 928 at the same time...

I'm with you on that one. Plus I'll build me a house on the Socal Coast with an Airplane Hanger to house my "every year" 928's. I'll take that Ferrari too ;)

I'm in! (Lottery win also required)
