Another Sign of future Collector Car Status?
 

In this months Hemmings Sport and Exotic celebrating 100 years of Aston Martin, as an alternative to winning the lottery to buy an Aston they list alternatives. Here is alternative number 1: The pic is a Club Sport which they do not realize, and is way better and probably as expensive as the Aston they compare it to.

The 928 is WAY cooler in my opinion. The rear of the Virage reminds me of a Mercedes.

When the numbers get down to under 500, maybe they will be worth something.
Till then it's just another old car that in it's production run hit the "FAIL" button.

Trabants, another classsic German car are now collectors items.:eek: (some people will collect ANYTHING!!)
Trying to talk up the value does not work, seen this on other forums I used to frequent,, MGB (a disgusting primitive piece of ****.:confused) (Mazda MX5 did it so much better!) TR8, (Triumph tried, but it just didn't work, too late.) 240Z Datsuns, looked good, but until they started transplanting Chev's etc, was just another underpowered Japanese rustbucket. (I thought they were so "collectable"I put a Toyota 1J turbo into one.) Sold it for mor than a "concours/collectors"car would sell for!
Why won't the powers that be start giving a hard look at Studebaker Golden Hawks, Now that is a car to drool over!:)
Really, who want's a car that costs double what it's worth to maintain?

Enjoy them while you got them. I'm not convinced that two generations from now will have any real interest in what we love.

Within 10 years there will be electric self navigating cars. If you think about it, the ripple from that will be fewer people learning to drive, and even fewer doing a lot of driving. They will be close to idea to replace taxi's, and private ownership vs coop or some kind of hours per month plan.

At some point early in this all cars will have some kind of transponder, and that will end all speeding off the track.

OTOH cars like the 928 may be among the few that are kept because of their track abilities, like some keep horses now. You never ride to work, but maybe a couple weekends a month cut loose on the track, or a drive in the country.

Don't have a lot of time but GM and Ford made more GTOs, Mustangs and Camaro etc., in a given years time (60,000 units/yr) than the entire 18 year run of Porsche's 928.
More 911s where made and they are also much more collected.
It is just that the 928 was hated by some at the time but that is all changing as Porsche builds SUVs and 4 doors now which make the 928 a real Porsche by comparison.
When Hemming's Staff is starting to respect the 928, means it is already happening as hundreds of thousands will read the article.
Hemming's also seems to recommend buying the automatic, saying it suits the car well.

Hemming S&E always speak favorably of the 928. The editor is a fan. He's contacted me to discuss early 928s.

Talking about collector status may not make it happen, but writing interesting articles about the "cult of the 928", and getting published, sure wouldn't hurt.

I just got a email from Hagerty on classic car sales. It said figures were real good for 2012 and they expect it to get better this year. "But the biggest story of 2012 is likely the degree of strength and interest in the bottom of the market."

As far as I am concerned, I think I can get back about what I have in my car and I have had fun driving it. If it goes up in value, even better.

A friend just bought a new GM Volt and that should be interesting to look at. He got it for just under $31,000. Of course they, GM ,taking a big loss on it.
