You've got $20k. Super..buyer. What could you buy.?

Hello.
I have $20K to spend -perhaps- Say you do as well and you are jaded as they come about the 928.
You are a gentlemen and no dummy when it comes to dealing with others.
What do you propose the best deal you could muster NOT just with how would much cash you have but including your character and honesty?
What do you think you could end up with...928 wise?
Curious as I am looking .
Money, I believe doesn't buy everything.

Best value looks to be an unthrashed one, garaged, lightly used over last 10-15 years, from an aging owner who as kept it over 20 years --- whose kids and/or grandkids have no interest in preserving it.

Those are, for all practical purposes, free to a good home. Convince owner of your sincerity and you will keep at least 1/2 of the $20, maybe more.

Refresh for a car like that involves fixing trivial issues and costs about $6K parts.

Done, with at least $5K - $10K still in your pocket.

There are other types of sellers out there with all kinds of value possibilities, but if you want to focus on those where persuasion yields results, its that one. One of the finest GTS cars was redistributed like that a couple years ago. Basically, IIRC, a sub 20 price for a 16K mile car from a 90 year old lawyer.

We picked-up a very nice, lightly used 73K mi 86, similar way, for $2K.

All that said, no way I'd pay $20K for any 928. Maybe a Cayenne V8 turbo. Not a 928, that's a project car.

A lower mileage 80-86 S euro with a great maintenence history that has always been garaged. Garaged is key, then you won't have to spend big $$ on restoring the interior & paint. Be patient, they are out there. If the extra power of the euro is not needed, save a few bucks and get a US version because they are much more plentiful. If spending less as Landseer suggests, you have to ask yourself-are you capable of bringing a not so perfect car back to it's former glory ? If the answer is no, it will cost you plenty in labor charges.02 T

Budgets and buying nice old cars don't mix well. $20k seems like a lot until you trip over a pristine car for $24k and somebody else buys it while you twist. Know your finances, but don't let them lead you around by the nose.

Decide on what you want, what parts of it are deal killers, and what parts you are more flexible about. My wife won't have a red car, I don't want a sunroof. I want good original paint, but for the "right" car I could deal with both bad paint and a sunroof (white car easy to paint and swap the roof while I am at it).

Mythical really nice old 928. I've seen a few, but my concern is that I've also owned well cared for 5 year old 928 and SoCal sun was already shrinking the leather on the dash. Unless you can protect it from the sun ALL the time, that pristine car is going to need work within 5 years. Why pay for pristine and new interior vs average to poor interior and have it done in a longer lasting modern material like Alcantara?

So what would I buy?
The next one I found that tickled my fancy and didn't spook my wife too much. Last one like that was an 86 Euro 5 spd non sunroof.
