Jerry's Spare Tire Cover
When I went to the OCIC in Denver in 2006 they were giving some flat plastic handmade spare tire covers as door prizes at the awards banquet. I didn't win one. My cover was broken in two when I bought my first 928, so I thought I would just make one of my own since I had a good source of black ABS plastic. However when I looked more closely at mine I noticed that it was not flat but has a significant depth formed into it along three sides.
Being creative as I am, I thought with all the scrap plywood and other building materials I had around from having just built a house and garage for myself and my family, I cut and fit a bunch of it into some kind of crude forming dies that I could use with the application of some selectively placed heat and replicate the shape of the cover. It came out pretty nice although I have refined the process, and the forms, to make them much more professional looking than the first one. Since then I have made a bunch of them which I have been supplying to 928 guys online in various ways, and all over the world. Just before Xmas I shipped 43 to Australia as part of a group buy that those guys had put together. It takes just under an hour to make one and the material costs about $13 each. They are made of 3/16 inch ABS black plastic and are quite sturdy. They fit just about all of the 928s except the origianl 6 or 9 Press cars that were built before production began, I think. Those covers are quite different. The price of mine is $75 each plus standard shipping and handling of $23 to domestic addresses and about $55 to most foreign locations except Canada which I think is about $40. Contact me by email and/or simply send the money by paypal with your shipping address to: jfeather@bresnan.net I will also take a check by mail if you wish. I bought one of these from you back in 2010. Very solid build, and fit perfectly.

Jerry I have to confess - I modified mine. After a year & more in the ariizona sun with a liittle weight on top it had deformed a little. Concave in the middle.
I removed it - clamped it flat in a fixture that consistent of some wood shims - two BBQ Grates and a big sheet of wood. I then shock treated the cover with boiling water to get it almost "reformed". I cut a sheet of plywood to fit inset inside the tapered edges and drilled a matrix of holes though the cover and plywood, countersunk the holes and fasteed the two together using fasteners designed for particleboard (wide straight screws with small countersunk heads. These were long enough to come just flush with the inside of the panel. I then glued the heavily profiled GTS foam under the whole thing and its back in business better than ever. To make it look a little better I also sprayed the top surface to hide the little screwheads better. It is now a super sturdy device (and easily holds my weight). Is it needed? - maybe only if you live somewhere super hot and keep weighty stuff in the hatch... Alan

BTW don't take this wrong - Jerry's cover is at least 300% better than the original GTS part when new...
With the heavily profiled foam formed for the GTS - the top is not totally supported in the middle - thats why I added the plywood underneath - strengthened it in the process too. I keep a weighty briefcase right there and over time it took its toll. It is 100% returned to full function now. Alan

Nice report(s) Alan. I'm glad to see you are able to adapt my stuff the the particular needs of your car or climate, or both.

I also have one of your covers. Before I was always nervous when putting stuff in the trunk. Now I gladly throw a bike back there, or a whole months luggage. And the original peace sits quietly in the corner, retired.
I've also riveted the original, metal spare tire sticker onto it. Looks wonderful with the contrasting brass-color on the black ABS-plastic.
