Indiana Jones of tools
Anyone following my restoration post will recall the discussion about diffing into my dads old tool chests....
Quick overview...Dad retired about 10-12 years ago....moved from NC to FL....gave me all his tools...being grown, I had my own, so his went into a storage building. Sometime during storage, a tree fell on the back of the shed and collapsed it, this was not visible from the front or sides of the shed. It took me about 6 months to notice it, at which time a lot of rainwater got onto the tool chests. I fixed the shed, but saw multiple snakes, and got out.... Dad was a German car mechanic in the 70's before becoming a machinist, and taking a factory job to provide better bennies for his family. Fast forward about 5-years...I went all archeological today, and emptied the storage sheds at my old house...so far I have thrown out about 25# of tools that were too far gone, got about 25# in a bucket for soaking in WD40, and about 1000# of tools still to dig through, along with (2) rolling tool chests, which are very salvageable... ![]() ![]()

Out of curiosity, what brands of tools did your father use? I like vintage tools. Apparently I am not the only one as they bring a premium on Ebay.

Gosh, so many....most are craftsman, but quite a few unknowns....and I have not gotten 1/4 through it all...,one drawer, that had the worst rust damage, had some niiice old craftsman stuff....(well, nice at one time anyway)
Dad had sold a lot of his stuff before he retired...I remember as a kid, playing with all his tools...had some nice old stuff at one time. I'll let you know if I find anything.., |

I love the sticker on the red tool box. It just spells out your situation...and all of ours...for that matter.
BTW, never throw any Craftsman away...If Sears is still the company it used to be and you want shiny new ones instead of rusty vintage, they will exchange them. About the only company I know of that guaranteed for life is really what you get.

I think Sears only replaces broken tools.

Sears has a satisfaction warranty on Craftsman hand tools, but it should not be abused if you want Sears to stay around.
Rust does not kill all old tools, so don't throw ANYTHING away without posting some picts in a place like General Tool Discussion - The Garage Journal Board Evaporust takes off the rust without damage, diluted vinegar works with care, and many of the old tool guys have electrolysis rigs to remove rust and recover old tools. Don't wire wheel, don't mess if you don't know what your doing, leave it to the collector that buys it. Old Craftsman is rarely a pot of gold, way way way too much of it. |

I threw away a lot of wrenches and pliers that had the slip joint stops or bolts rusted through, a few SK wrenches, some combo-wrenches that were no longer the size stamped on them, a bunch of sockets that had rusted through, and about 10 ratchets, of various sizes, that were too far gone. I had taken some to Sears in the past, and they said the rust damage was considered abuse, and would not warranty.....too bad, but even though I threw away alot...there is soooooooo much good stuff, and it appears the drawer that took the worst hit was his "common" tool drawer, so the really expensive stuff was in drawers lower down the stack...I have (1) chest vacuumed and de-rusted, and reassembled about 90%...the paint is bad, but the chest is in great shape, and will be safe in my shop the rest of its days!
Boise...you are right...I like the old "fukengoovin" sticker underneath it as well..., kind of the "oh well, if it happens, let it roll" attitude.... Jack, sorry, no....I really am proud to have his old stuff, and it made me feel really good to let him know I was cleaning it all up for use in my shop, I sent him the pics, and he seemed so excited, lol...at 75, he does not get into much anymore....I hope he can come up and visit and see it all one day....

For no sane reason I have started collecting older SK when I find it. I've got a very nice SAE 1/2 drive set of 80 year old sockets, and a couple of the clear green with white stripe drivers.

AND...After
![]() I hand painted the red knobs black this evening, but they need a 2nd coat tomorrow...I also need to figure out to change the caster wheels, they are welded onto the frame...perhaps I can change just the wheels and not the assembly..have not looked into it yet These are not "showpiece" jobs, I only scraped, roughed, wiped down, and spray painted. I am happy with them tho'

Good deal on the jack. I bought a similar one from Harbor Freight for $80 a few months back.

HF had almost the same one on sale local today for 129$, it looks very similar, but does not have the lug nut tray... Then they have one that has only 1 hoop style handle in the side for 80$. They look like decent quality. I think I got a deal!

With Craftsman its a good idea to check the model number history online, LOTS of issues with jacks in recent years and you don't want to find out yours has a problem after something is in the air.
