Porsche Crest Considering buying a '84 Auto Euro S

Like the title says, I am trying to buy a very nice '84 Euro S, twin dizzy under the hood. It's out of state, discussing price with hesitant seller.
Very nice 928, clean. Have not driven it. Owner seems to have taken very good care of it, wants me to agree to offer him the car back first if i'd sell down the road.
I think i heard Euros with autoboxes are good fun so long as the vacuum lines are good to trans/working properly.

Where i live the auto would probably be very enjoyable, i live just outside Philadelphia.
Never driven an auto or 80-84 Euro car, i like the 16V early cars best.
Anybody have a Euro S auto to describe it's character?

My parts car is an 84 Euro S AT, not exactly in 100% performance when I drove it a very limited amount prior to pulling the engine for use in my 85 5 spd, but if I had liked it much it would not have become a parts car.

AT cars like torque, the S4 makes a good bunch with the flappy tuned intake and 5.0L. The 4.7L Euro S makes HP, its a top end performer, which means 60 to 100 will be a scream, 0-60 not so much.

Just not that exciting to me, about as fast as our Lincoln Continental, nothing like the comfort, reliability, or economy of the modern engine. Funny really I often think driving the Continental how sweet it would be to have the Ford motor in a 928.

If you like an AT in a 928, my first choice would be an S4, or cheaper a US early car which will feel pretty much the same as the Euro 90% or better of the time.

One point for the 84 Euro S AT is that it has a really high stall torque converter, like 2350 vs 1900 to compensate for the less torque vs the S4, but that also means day to day it tends to get worse MPG.

I've got an 84 USA with an 89 S4 transmission & T/C, giving it a 2.5 rear.
Its a great combo for sporty driving. Of all 928's I've driven, this is my favorite.

928 5 speed is a royal pita to drive in any kind of stop/go traffic.
928 Auto is so much easier. Pleasureable.

If I had to choose one, regardless of powerplant, it would be the auto over the manual.
And, in fact I do. The Euro S generally sits and the old 85 auto or the 86 auto get the call.

(daughter has the 84/89 combo right now)

There is an 85 Euro auto for sale in Fla.

Matt, my only concern with this whole thing would be that you might start neglecting your 1983!

It's does sound nice.
Limiting factors at my house are garage space and spouse approval.
What helps me is that there is not a lot to tempt me around here -- I think there are 5-6 S's (one euro and two part cars) and one S4 in the whole St. Louis area.

Let us know if you pull the trigger, and some pics please. Dave.

I rescued an 84 auto Euro for my daughter, which she now drives several times a week around Yorktown, VA. By far the best performance of the 3 cars i have owned. 2 before and 1 after photo:

Thanks for the above info. It looks pretty promising right now.

He finally called me, and we are discussing the sale. He is buying a Panamera as it turns out, he's a bit older than me, wanted to find the best owner for the car.

He is treating himself to the Panamera due to surgery he needs to undergo.

The only auto that will be neglected is my Ford Bronco, no 928 left outside, have three bays.

And yes the Spouse wants me to decide between the 2 eventually. I'm that that lucky!

The Stepson is an 84 Euro. I love driving it. At @3500 rpm, it becomes a freaking rocket. Scary fast.
84 wiring diagrams in the WSM are not fun. Porsche screwed up and left off all the wire colors. Makes it even more fun to work on if you like a challenge. Good Luck

Thanks Stepson but..

No longer considering buying this car, motor's block is possibly from a 5L i am guessing, no number at all on it,
no paperwork whatsoever on motor rebuild, but it looks very nice in pic.

Owner withheld a lot it needs and stretched the truth too much to trust at this point. I have dealt with this type too many times to repeat it.
Maybe some of you would be interested, I am no longer interested.

I'll bet someone here knows of this car.

1984 Porsche 928 Euro "S"

To end this on a positive note; at a light today a man asked to take a photo of my car with his phone, asked if it was a 1973?

I already have a great 928.

FYI to those that may be interested in this car. It may be a very good motor rebuild with a new 5L block without and serial number He is just not my cup of tea however and i am turned off. Here is our last conversation by email to get an idea for yourselves. He will accept $5000 for the car.

me:
Hi, I can be reached tonight around 5pm.

What i would need by email is:

1. the VIN #,

2.The Motor Serial Number starting with M28/
this is located on the front-top of the aluminum block between and below the top two radiator hoses.
Can be hard to find the first time, take your time and look closely.

3.Also is the windshield cracked or even chipped?

4.Is the paint original or a repaint to you knowledge and or expertise? I can tell very quickly.
I ask because the rear bumper cover is incorrect and has been replaced.

5.I would need additional photographs (jamb areas help to determine a repaint), Interior and Exterior detail pictures are appreciated. It is a long/$ train ride to CT.

If the motor may?? have been rebuilt at 85k miles and current miles are 141k, the Timing Belt/Water Pump are very due.

You mentioned you have not tagged the car for the street, I don't understand why?.

FYI, a later 928 S4 automatic is a better drive by many accounts. It's got more torque down low (better for an autobox) and better fuel economy due to it's more modern torque converter. They are very plentiful in the marketplace which is why i need more information ^^^^ from you.

Vin/Motor serial are very important when no other documentation is available.

I hope this is not off-putting..

Thanks so much,

Matt

him:
1) wpozzz92zes841479 2) Removed, Decked when rebuilt? 3) Yes 4 inch by passage side wiper (Which I would never have found till I just looked) 5) had to be repainted at some time in the past since it looks to good. I’ll have time soon to get back to the garage. 6) water/belt/starter/tune up/Alternator and anything else just done 7) Getting to DMV is not on my list of things to do. My last registered toy went under 100 miles in a year. I’ve been enjoying my wife’s G37S drop top. Driving the 928 is sooooooo far down my list of things I want to do…. Now If I found some guy to wait at DMV for 2 hours then take the car for Vin Verification that would be a different story, I for sure would make time to use it at least 1 time a month

The headlights don't look Euro. Did some Euros get the sealed beam lights after import?

All of the ones legally imported had the Euro headlights destroyed and replaced, but many cars were imported during the early 80's where enforcement varied a lot.

Vin is wp0zzz92zes841479, the letter O is not used.

Googled wpozzz92zes841479 and found old Rennlist thread from 2010 about starting issues, and used correct vin to find Calif smog history.

In the RL thread the owner seems to be getting the 5.0L from the import sticker and was having trouble finding the motor ID. Owner also sounds like a kid, talks about working on his Subaru etc.

This man is 56 and has owned for 6 months, never registering it for some reason. I asked why and he mocked the question.

When a Seller acts hesitant but is really wanting badly to sell, thinking he is smarter than the potential buyer in that regard (mind games) I am out at that point. It's probably a decent car though. His wife is an MD and they have plenty of $ so i am guessing it's nice enough, he is simply not a true enthusiast. He put twists on it recently. Interior has seen a lot of sun, not as nice as it seems. seat pics never show driver bolster, typical.

The motor look pretty sweet to my eyes though so a bit of a letdown until I talked with the people at WebCams.

Having them grind a set Euro S2 Cams for my beloved 1983S.

Which leads me to my next thought I had driving home after yet another thumbs up moment for the 928;

I get so many oooos and ahhhs about this car on the wealthy Philadelphia Main Line were Bentley cars are seen daily.

How the heck are these Porsches so under appreciated and cheap?????

Somebody hold their nose and call the Seller. Rescue the car. his # 203 622 1848 (back on topic) Over and out

6 month owner, its a flip or bail once true condition known.

Would be good to have it in enthusiast hands, but why reward a flipper when other cars are available?

If I lived closer I'd be there right now. $5000 for a decent Euro not a lot of doe.
But I don't live close and don't want to take the chance of wasting a whole lot of time and some money.
Besides I love my car, plenty quick for my ability.
