Oh lord what have I done

I was doing a fluid change on my '84 manual and well I screwed up. Wondering just how bad. Mistaking a large and long bolt on the passenger side on the trans about half way bay and half way up for the fill plug I removed it and (clunk) a metal piece on the inside of the trans fell to the bottom. After draining the oil I used a tele-magnet to pull it to the drain plug hole. It's to big to get out.

So now that I'm in this mess how do I get out of it?

I can't picture what you may have caused to fall into it. There's not much there to mess with.

The back side of the transaxle should have a removable cover.

Good point I just got so frustrated I didn't think to take the back cover off and take a look. But no idea what it was that may have been held up and consequently fallen when I remove what ever that is?

Well no it was simply on the other threaded end of the bolt that was about 2.5" long. When it came out it allowed what ever it was to fall to the bottom of the case

Suggest you not engage clutch, shift gears, or spin the wheels until you figure it out. Maybe a Haynes or Bentley has an exploded view of the box? Google.... Thinking its a bolt for a shift rod carrier, fork or something similar. There are shafts with gears that slip to and fro with the shift rod is moved to change ratios. These shafts need support in the center of the box. the other end of the shafts will have support built into the housing of the trans-axle. Good luck

Ok. Found a link to exploded view of your transmission. If I got the wrong year, just go to home page and start over.

Okay, if it's what I think it is you would be less screwed doing porn. I'm not 100% sure but it looks like it may hold your preselect spring. I just looked at the factory manual. It seem to be the only thing it could be. What year is the tranny and can you take a pic further back so I can see exactly what bolt it is. The good news is that once the tranny is out it may be able to be put back by access through the top cover.

+1 on the preselector spring. Studying the exploded view, it seems the logical part.

I'm thinking its the detent thing, 92830330103 and accessible from the top cover with a magnet etc., but if pulling the tranny I would certainly refresh while its out.

Well that's what I was thinking after looking at an exploded view to. Just how hard is it to pull out the transaxle? Are there any do's or don'ts

Sorry but here's a don't........

Don't undo that bolt unless you are prepared to pull the transaxle.

Truly sorry.....I just couldn't help myself
