Differential Question

Ok, quickie for you guys...I know this is stated in several threads, but my OCD wont let me skip through them to find what I need, I just read them all, never focusing on finding my answer.....

There are (3) plugs on the diff, (1) on rear-bottom, drain....(1) on rear top...fill, and (1) on the opposite end, drain....correct?

my question, is there only (1) fill port? The reason I ask, the fluid from the back drain seemed thicker, like gear oil should be, the fluid from the front drain seemed much thinner-more fluid.....does that make sense? Are they different chambers?

Please enlighten me....I know probably a stupid question, but I just drained it all out, and want to refill tomorrow evening....I have the fluid, and know that it holds 4 qts. (well at least the back does?)

Hey buddy,

You are correct so far as the ports go, however I think you need to drain the torque tube while you are doing that and it is 7 to 8 total qts. The fill port is the upper rear and will fill all chambers.

I have about 10 qts., so no prob there....drain the TT? From where? I thought it was just a shaft in a tube with bearings?

for your 5 speed there are 2 drains and one fill plug,
the drains are at the front and rear of the transaxle ,
the fill is from the rear middle plug, make sure you can remove the fill plug first.

it takes about 4 qts to fill the trans axle.

I think the other poster was trying to say drain the torque converter not the TT,
since your clutch doesnt hold any fluid dont worry about draining it

Trust me!! There is only one fill plug. The one you found. Do not, what ever you do take the bolt in the side if the case out. Trust me lol

Lol! Thanks! I read your post! Sage advice!

Thanks Merlin. Could have been just me, but the fluids from each end seemed to have a different consistency, which prompted my question. It was getting dark tho' and I did not have the lights on....

Oh, I did make sure the fill plug came out first.

One of the plugs is located at a lower point so it gets more of the "sludge" from the bottom of the case which may be why they appeared to be different fluids.
