check the fuse, and the bulbs
then the connections at the rear of the corners inside the hatch,
look for a small white connector on the hatch floor this is for the side marker light,
also inspect the connection points behind the liner for the rear tail lights
also check the grounds on the floor of the hatch and the spare tire well and behind the rear quarter liners

Lamp Control Unit -

Hey Rockclone, Perhaps your problem is in the Lamp Control/Monitor Unit that tests and distributes all the running, marker, brake, etc.... lights. The internal circuitry of this small silver box checks for burned out bulbs, brake pads and other errors to turn on the dash warning alarm. It is located behind the kick panel by the drivers left foot.

Mrmerlin probably knows more about it's proper operation but one time I chased a brake pad thickness warning light problem around for a few days before discovering a poor wiring connection coming out of the lamp control unit. The PO had just half halfheartedly (halfassed) twisted some wires together instead of soldering the connection properly. If the circuitry at the rear quarter panel checks out - this may be worth a look.

Good Luck, Michael

probably a bulb connection,
the flasher relays are pretty robust,
but its easy enough to swap
