928 Performance Mods You Need To Make.
I was thinking at work this would also be a great thread to have here.
Along with Engine Performance Mods please including Suspension, and Braking modifications you may be making, or have made. Don't forget Lightness=Quicker and better Handling As aircooled 911 owners know, (especially late air cooled 993s) you could spend $20k just to get another 20HP out of those motors. I'm not kidding. Our 928s make bigger HP gains for much less. :) |

Two bits of advise, get your 928 running as close to perfect in stock trim, sharpen up the focus on what your goal is, what your intended use is. Whats expensive in any hobby is changing directions or taking small steps. OTOH with small steps you can slowly figure out what you like, big steps and changing your mind costs more.
Good start for most people is a top end refresh and new exhaust. Get rid of all the vacuum leaks and misrouted lines, and drop in a set of 85/86 manifolds with an X or Y, high flow cats, and high flow muffler. I'd leave suspension to the last as you aren't really going to be testing the limits of the suspension until the rest is working well. |
Have already removed the spare tire, jack, tools, rub strips, headlight squirters, rear bumperettes, door locks, rear wiper arm and assembly, heavy insulation replaced with lighter insulation, sunroof cassette, rear muffler, and swapped in aero mirrors, 8" H4's and euro driving & fog lights. LS3 motor with lighter A/C compressor and alternator, and 6spd Z06trans/diff/tq tube with a MGW short shifter and of course the Piranha Bros 6 spd conversion kit. Estimating this OB should tip the scales at approx 2975 lbs. Power should be right at 560 crank hp. Have already installed a lightweight billit flywheel, stage II clutch, pressure plate and t-out bearing, all aluminum radiator, dual electric fans, chrome moly axles with H.D. C/V joints, Wilwood calipers, Cayenne rotors, Weltmeister springs, Koni reds, and Fikse rims mounted on Conti Extreme's all around. Should be good for as long as Tony wants it. Cool that its available again. Wish they'd make the green for #1 car. Whatever happened to Paul Champagne and that lasered pasha leather seat? Tony, J.P. is amazing. Am a big believer, nicest save of parts/cars EVVVAHHHH. Car looks better w/o cage, and is safer for street (no helmets / bars are quite unsafe). |

Part of owning a 928 is dealing with the fact your baby might get bumped, might need body work or a respray, might need a new chassis.
I spent half my life working with fabric, but don't really understand too much about various longevity issues. Some old stuff seems fine, some just crumbles after a little use. |

I've seen in print very old autos (70 years) with original interiors.
If out of the sun and kept at the right humidity interiors can last a very long time. When Mike made the original comment about 30 year old fabric holding up, I think he was referring to the 'new' pasha fabric available and that it is really NOS. I thought the same, is is NOS or really New? probably the former. What material is the factory pasha? anybody know? Bet Jim Doerr does. |
NOS Pasha has been around in limited colors for a price for a few years, this is new production that I was talking about.
Last trip to the UK we went through the Victoria and Albert museum which has big section on costumes and reference collection of fabrics. Unfortunately I didn't retain much of value regarding preservation. Leather and some fabrics get very brittle when dry, thats about my limit. |
