Annoying headlight motor problem

So I have posted on here before about my headlights. When you turn them on they will go up and then back down to the down position and then the lights will turn off, when you turn them off they go down and then back up halfway and the lights turn off. I have so far replaced the switch, the fuse, and the relay. When I first got the car running they worked fine and I NEVER CHANGED ANYTHING WITH THE POSITION OF THE MOTOR. What Im wondering is if it could be the wires by the motor, perhaps they are plugged in, in the wrong order or corroded. Do you guys know?

Headlight Drive Motor -

Hey Mix - I had a somewhat similar intermittent headlight positioning issue. Below is a write-up on taking the drive motor apart. My problem was the circular tracks on the circuit board and a couple of their sliding electrical contacts were dirty. It was a fairly straight forward process to disassemble, lubricate the worm gear and clean everything up - just watch for the single tiny (spacer) metal ball at the end of the motor shaft. My headlights have worked great ever since.....

You might do a search on this and other 928 sites for additional information. Prior to taking anything apart make some notes/drawings or take a couple of photos to help during reassembly and alignment. Make sure to securely install "C" clips on the pivot points of the external lift arms. I added some sealant to each "C" clip for a little more security and peace of mind. There are a couple of warnings mentioned where the rotating arm can pop off it's pivot joint and punch a hole or damage the radiator as the motor runs. The motors have a lot of torque.

Headlight Motor - Reassembly

Keep us posted and good luck, Michael

Those connections look correct - check the motor track and the diodes for operation.

I would put my money on the motor tracks / contacts, similar to a wiper motor when your wipers don't stop in the right place or won't turn on or off at all.

When I first bought my car it did a similar thing to what you are describing. In my case the alternator was bad and it did this when the voltage dropped low. Replaced alternator (and battery) and no more problems. Your situation is likely different, I thought I'd just input my experience.

Hey guys,

First sign of wacky headlight issues, take the headlight motor apart and check the ROTOR DISC. Make sure there's NO RUST on the internal rotor disc. I had two motors with this exact same problem. Usually you'll see rust spots on the rotor disc, in both the UP & DOWN positions. Make sure the rotor disc is spotless and free from any rust or pit-marks in these 2 positions. Takes 5 minutes to fix & clean!

Get some liquid rust buster, and some fine grit steel wool, or fine grit wet/dry sandpaper (I used some sanding cloth). Place a few drops on rotor disc, give the rust busting liquid a minute or two to work, then sand out the rust spots. When the rotor disc is clean, you're good to go. No need to rub too hard...be gentle on the disc.

I went absolutely NUTS, for weeks, trying to get rid of my headlight issues!
