It smells like...Victory

I was driving the Ssssss yesterday and caught myself rubbernecking and immediately checking the cluster and every orifice of my car when I caught a whiff of smoke.
The smell was coming from a beater in front of me on the highway, and I started laughing -- but I realized that I never did that until I drove a 30 year old 928.

Like a zen master, I now drive with all five senses.
Has anyone else developed this habit?

Yes, and it saved me at least once. Smelled coolant, kept driving, then steam from hood at the base of the windshield. The heater hose fitting at the back of the block had popped out, releasing most of the coolant. Temp did not really climb until I parked at work, and the rest of the coolant leaked out.
Drive with attention to gauges, but noises, feel, smell and observation are the first indicators!

I always make sure there hasn't been another car around for a minute or two before I start to panic. 99% of the time it's not me

I explained to my wife that part of the allure of the car is that it could catch fire...she didn't get it.

My wife isn't allowed in the car since her soda exploded all over my perfect carpet

You should see my wife's XC70, after a can of orange soda went off with the nine year old.
I thought it was funny until I had to clean it.
Were taking it on vacation this week with our wild Indians...

Daughter had a mouse nest in plenum fill an 84 cockpit with smoke.

Did as I'd advised, stop, walk away.

Fortunately it didn't go to flames.

I think you meant 'light a fire'...

It's good practice when you get out of your classic car to walk around the front not back of it every time, so you can smell for fuel or coolant etc., unless you drive a 911.
