1980 928 running very horribly

My 1980 928 started running really badly a week ago, you start it up and it idles up and down at times. Sometimes it will stall, but you rev it in park and it seems to do alright, sometimes it's not very steady. And when you put it in drive the car just stalls or you gotta tap the pedal as fast as you can to keep it moving. So what do you think is wrong with the engine? Bad timing? Clogged injectors?

Where are all the possibilities it could leak from?

Check the rubber connectors between the spiders and the air intake. I had one in particular that had cracked and caused the same symptoms. I replace all 8 and the problem is gone.

Okay I checked out the rubber connectors. They all look good, now it won't even start. It fires and if you give it gas it starts to run a little and dies right away. It puts out some really nasty smoke too. Do you think it is a clogged fuel filter or still a vacuum leak? My brakes were having trouble releasing pressure so could a vacuum leak explain engine problems and brake problems? I'm totally lost

Best bet, being a CIS car....remove the spider, and replace every single vacuum hose, fuel hose...then change the fuel filter...check pumps to make sure they are running (1 of my pumps was seized...new right out of the box), check the in tank strainer, if you have one, and check the little filters in the fuel distributor. I removed mine. I think there are some pics in my "it's alive" thread...

If you don't have CIS, then don't F with the distributor....but do the vacuum lines..there are quite a few under the spider....

Good luck...don't let it whup ya!

I think I fixed it. Mechanic it had been sitting at put cheap ass spark plugs in and they were ruined. Seems to fire right up now.

Advice I got was use good old copper core...that is what she was designed to use.

Well it's not running at all now. It will crank, and fire occasionally. But die instantly. Doesn't sound like its firing on all cylinders. Thought it might be a gas problem. Poured a little in intake but it still did not fire. I'm thinking it could be something with the distributor or ignition coil. Any ideas?

Okay I got it running after cleaning the end of the green wire with contact cleaner. What exactly does that wire do?

Send a message via Yahoo to Mrmerlin
hint go invest in a new green wire,
it will last for as long as you own the car,
and the car will always start.
Odds are the old wire is more than 25 years old,
and its a number 1 contributor to a 928 engine not running
