Side effects of a bad green wire in a 1980

My car has trouble starting. It will crank and crank and fire occasionally but not stay running. Poured fuel in intake still not firing. New spark plugs. Considered replacing coil and distributor but the car started after I cleaned the end of the green wire with contact cleaner.

hint go invest in a new green wire,
it will last for as long as you own the car,
and the car will always start.
Odds are the old wire is more than 25 years old,
and its a number 1 contributor to a 928 engine not running

Where can I buy one? And when it does start and run for as long as you want, if you shut it off and let it sit for a while, you start it and it fires and runs and dies right away and you start it again and hold the pedal to the floor it bounces at around 3000 RPMs and shoots out some black and white smoke and then it settles down and runs normally.

Now it seems to be starting a little bit better but when you do start it, it idles up and down.. It sounds like it shut off and fires back up again. Does that until you rev it up. Still doesn't start right away when you let it sit. What do you think?

the trick with the 928 is to fix every worn out part that can make the engine run or not run as ther are more than a few parts once this is done then the engine should run well for a long time

if the timing belt marks are good then the distributor should also be good ,
so it would be wise to look at other things first,
like a green wire
