Best way to check timing in a 1980?
What is the best way to check the timing without taking too much apart?

belt itself for too loose/tight. walking off center cam wheel groves.. inspection. pop the pass side cover/ center of cover long 8mm? bolt, finesse the rad hose, dip stick , maybe remove the air tube on top?.
tightens and loosen by the tension (which should be full of oil) down where the first cover meets middle cover. you need the kempf tool (exc instructs with it) to perfect it. but if its way loose or way tight at least able to catch a problem before it becomes painful without the tool. timing marks on vibration damper what do urs say. standing in front and reading , 0/0 to.... timing cam wheels marks are on wheels back side. distributor has markings/notches where are urs? |
Timing light?
Use a timing light. Plug it in ground and +, then place the induction lead on number 1 plug wire. Start the car shoot the light at the damper and adjust as necessary at the dizzy.

Yes it is a new procedure for me. All I've ever done was replace the belt on my bmw and it i just lined up the marks. But that was with most of the engine apart.

Be sure and pull the vacuum advance hose from your distributor. Cap the hose (vacuum leak) until you're finished.
