Rock In The Road -

Just finished going down a list of the final things to check and pack prior to Miss Purdy heading toward Telluride - Silverton - Ouray for a road trip. In checking the local highway and weather reports this story came up - "State Highway 145 between Cortez and Telluride is closed indefinitely because of a rock slide".

https://kdvr.com/2019/05/25/massive-rockslide-closes-colorado-highway-indefinitely/

A couple of years ago my wife and I came around a blind corner on the million dollar road to Ouray and just missed a basket ball sized rock in the middle of our lane. The motor home behind us took out his oil pan. In the mountains, there's a rock in the road and then there - IS - a rock in the road.....

saw this on the local news - they're always doing rock mitigation up in the hills to try and catch these before they come down - guess they missed this one - have fun

It seems there are frequent rock slides in Glenwood Canyon. I remember when the road was only two lane, now of course it's 4 lane and took 10 years to build. Beautiful drive, but steep part of I-70, between Dot Zero and Glenwood Springs.

just saw a thing where they're going to build a new road around this rock - i guess it's cheaper than removing it - and it has a name - memorial rock

Renamed Tourist Attraction -

I also did read where the Colorado Highways Dept had decided to leave the 8.5 million pound boulder in place out on Highway 145. Evidently the Road and Bridge bean counters and the tourist bureau got together and decided to simply change the name from "A Big A$$ Rock in the Road" to "Memorial Rock" as a geographical tourist attraction.

Perhaps the lesson learned from when the Oregon State Highway Department dynamited a dead whale that had washed up onto their beach back in 1970 was also a factor...
