1984 928S Hatch\trunk problem
 

Hi Guys

the 2 buttons - drivers and passengers sides that opening the trunk are working fine , i also can hear the motor in the latch working but it never opens the trunk.
any ideas why ?

At the risk of stating the obvious, how are the struts? Surprisingly, some silicon (solid or spray) on the gasket can go a long way.

Struts are fine trunk stay up with no problems

Hey bender if the latch motor runs continuously without touching knob it would be a different fix. But if the hatch won't pop I would look at the components of the latch which usually wear down.
There is a good walk through by Wally Plumley, I think it's up at 928OC?

Sure man, but "fix" is a relative term.
On mine it was the upper mechanism and I created a small shim to tilt into better alignment...if you want a quick fix.
I've heard of folks moving the entire motor to bottom of adjustment slots.
Several other mods out there if you don't want to replace components.

Should I start with replacing the upper or lower latch ?

IMHO I would shim under the base of the upper lock, this would be done to push the latch a little forward when closing.
If that causes the latch to pop when using knob controller, this means the white latch is worn and you have the option to order that part.
Look at PET diagram, there are different latches based on alarmed and non-alarmed cars. Mine was 928 512 161 03.

with some washers and adjustment problem was solved.
i can open the trunk with the switch ONLY when the doors are closed, is there a valet switch or something like that ?

The upper latch part is prone to cracking, the rubber like surround on the lower latch always fails in all cars. So, you need to verify if the upper latch arm is cracked, if so you will have to replace it, plan to order and replace the rubber like surround piece in the lower latch, then start considering adjusting. Many of the "fixes" involving washers, shims, pieces of plastic and the like don't work all that well over time...good parts properly adjusted is the best answer. by the way, the upper and lower latch assemblies are very expensive....if you want or have to replace them....
