Overheating and Radiator Problems i think

The car overheats after 10 minutes and the koolant cap just blows off. there was a new water pump and timming belt. The radiator gets hot at the top but is normal temperature at the bottom. I have no clue what the problem is.

its a 1979

More info would help.

Is this problem new - ie right after recent work on wp or coolant system?

Sounds like it could be air in system and if work was just done, thats the first place I would start.

Air in system, stuck thermostat, water pump defective, low coolant level, blockage in radiator, etc. I was going to say belt tension but the pump is driven off the timing belt.

Going out on a limb here and maybe the more experienced guys will correct me, but it sounds like the radiator needs to be replaced if it's original equipment.

I had this happening after my intake refresh...I put the !$#^*ing thermostat in backwards. Flipped it and all was well. Sounds like you may have a bad thermostat.
