Cam chain tensioner failure?
Has anyone ever had the cam chain tensioner fail on a 32v? I have been reading that it is a typical and catastrophic failure on a 944S/2 which has nearly the same head.
Thoughts?

Not sure if it makes the top ten of 32v engine failure modes, but it can happen. Intake cam is driven off the timing belt, and the exhaust cam is driven from the intake cam via gears and chain with I think its an oil pressure driven "pad" acting as a chain tensioner. The pads wear, not sure what else happens or what specifically fails or ifs its just skipping a tooth.
Not a real common failure mode, and I suspect failures are tied to reusing old parts. |

If I may, as an owner of a 944s and survivor or this cam chain pad failure, I would not even start the car if I did not know if the pads had been changed. The failure and massive and expensive. I bought the s knowing the pads had failed, what I learned was the pad pieces jam in the cam gear and chain, tearing the tension right out of the head and removing 8 teeth from the exhaust cam. Its a serious failure. The pads are nylon and after age the dry get brittle and crack then break apart. you can get pads from 944online and see pics of 944s failures. It's not a bad procedure but for you times 2, worth it though. Sorry if you loose sleep, but you need to do this.
