SF EuroS motor bad cam $350
Just saw this on CL San Francisco, 4.7L Euro S motor with a bad cam, $350. Chances are LOTS more valve damage, but its an 84 so if it includes all the intake parts price is a steal.
Porsche 928 4.7 ltr Euro V8 engine Listing says location is Los Altos, Mountain View. 84 means its LH injection, not CI$. |

What am I missing? Aren't the cams pretty much what gives these any value?

Cams have value, but not what they did early on. I'll use factory Euro S cams in one of my next builds, but the hot rod motor gets higher lift and longer duration rewelded cams using cheap early 80's US cores (total cost for a pair about $1200, good Euro S cams maybe $500).
In terms of value; Heads Intake system Cams block and in practical terms incidental items usually exceed the value of the block. Heads have no practical alternate source, and are key to most 16v high power builds. Devek as I recall used modified 944 heads, but it was also from a time when Euro parts were a lot harder to come by, and most porting efforts have resulted in Euro S performance at much higher costs. Intake again has no practical alternate source, and Euro 84/86 intake need little work to be used in a high output LH injected and sharktuned motor. Cams make a nice bump used with the rest, but there are two practical options starting from other cheaper and more common cams, reduced radius and welded. Cams break, but not nearly as frequently as other parts like a timing belt, so along with rewelding and a general move to 32v for power the used price of Euro cams has fallen a lot. Block not worth usual shipping costs, I'd give somebody local the block and pay for motor and shipping the rest of the parts if I could work it. That is the other big factor, all the top end parts can be easily shipped, not a whole motor which gets expensive fast. |
