New 928 owner
 

Hey guys. Just recently got my childhood dream car. She's a 1982 928. Poor thing has been severely neglected by its original owner. By neglected I mean never driven, left to rot. Then the guys grandson got a hold of her and left even more of her in ruin, by way of cut wiring, gutted hvac system, ect.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind, to sort of get some direction here. She's been very forgiving to me thus far. Already replaced every rubber line and hose in her, some of the wiring, ect.
Ordered a new voltage regulator, window switches, inner and outer tie rods ect. And I'm shopping for a nice set of wheels because the kid bolted on these god awful 18in chrome monstrosities, and the factory wheels are long gone.

First off there's a section of wiring that looks like it comes from the fuel tank area that's multi-colored wide and flat, but it's been cut off about 2 inches from the bottom of the tank. Then I see what looks like the same wiring coming from the fuse/relay panel area inside the car, again, cut off about 2 inches from the panel. Is this related to the fuel gauge? The gauge doesn't work, but the low fuel light on the gauge does work.

Secondly, this car has regular strut assemblies in the front, and adjustable " coilover" types in the rear. These are real, not some bolt on eBay junk. But I'm guessing these are not factory?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. This car and I have an agreement. I'll always treat her right, and she will never be a parts car. Lol.

I have two sets of rims if you are interested, one set of phone-dials (no tires) and one set of slotted (with good tires) Make me an offer I can't refuse.

Okay first. The section of wiring. What are the wire colors? Just a SWAG that they are the wires that suppposed to go to the fuel pump. The fuel pump should be located under the fuel tank behind a removable panel. Is the fuel pump there? The fuel gauge sensor is in the top of the fuel tank, and you probably are lucky that you ARE low on fuel.

Secondly, the factory shock assemblies on an '82 were non-adjustable while the rear shock assemblies were adjustable across all years. What you need to check are the front ball joints. Stock in 1982 were aluminum ball joints which need to be replaced due to failure without warning. Adjustable front shock assemblies were introduced in 1984(?) and adjustable assemblies can be retrofit to earlier years. The later assemblies include springs with one less coil and a threaded sleeve that slide onto the shock. The lower spring perch then mounts onto the adjustment "nut".

Only thing at the bottom of the tank is the fuel pump, so maybe some relic of an old alarm system?

Fuel sender signal comes out at the top of the tank and crosses the front top of the spare tire well. Check the multipin connector in the spare tire well, otherwise likely contacts in the pod.

There are only about half a dozen types of shocks that fit on a 928, and all but a couple were used one time or another at the factory (two kinds of Boge, two kinds of Bilstein), but chances are they are not original.

Before you buy wheels, decide on the tires on want to use, then get wheels to fit.

Good info on the shocks thanks. As far as the wiring goes I'll get some pics of it today. I know its orange green and white, kind of looks like the trailer wiring from a truck. Don't think it's the pump itself considering the car runs and I've been driving it daily for a week. Lots of gremlins in this thing :(.

Working on vacuum lines now. I replaced most of them on the right bank of the engine, but I noticed there's one line that goes from the distributor vac advance to a "T" then off to the rear right back of the engine. But there's no line going from the "T" to I'm guessing the intake plenum? It's just left open. The 2 ports on the back side of the throttle plate have lines going to them, I replaced those and just put them back the way I found them. But this missing line, hell the whole line assembly there, isn't pulling any vacuum at all. Where does that one go?

There should be a vacuum line diagram in the engine/hood compartment. If not some of the posts have had it included.

The offset is completely wrong. The fronts stick out further than the rears. I have always been partial to the phone dials, but I don't think the natural aluminum finish or silver painted would look good with this paint color. I've been looking for either a polished set of 16in dials, or a aesthetically pleasing way of semi blacking out a set with some polished accents,

Yea, those wheels suck...I just threw up a little, in my mouth.....the car is beautiful....phonies will be perfect on that car....

Good news is the rear wheels are bent beyond repair. I gave up after sticking 4oz of weight to them, so they are getting trashed regardless. Will any of the phone dials fit? Or is there a certain offset I have to get?

Got the vac lines done. Smoothed out the engine and make the slight backfire on deceleration stop. Yay!

And odd thing, I reached my hand up under the gauge pod and moved some wires and my fuel gauge started working again, briefly. I think there's a problem where the connector plugs into the cluster board. Seems like a simple fix. Hopefully.

I've got extra chromed manhole covers. They are not concours by any stretch of the imagination, but they are dam sure better looking than what you got.

I've got extra anodized ones also.

I hope the grandson was disinherited. Or worse.

Also, Panamera offsets are perfect for our 928. Lots of deals on take-offs on eBay. Boxster offsets as well.

Love the Dark Bronze and I am partial to the "manhole cover" myself!
