New to the shark tank
I worked at a PAVW dealership in the early 80's and really pined for a 928. Well, I just jumped in and bought myself a retirement gift. (I have to have something to do!) 1985 one-owner, 24k miles. It sat covered for the past five years, has never had the timing belt replaced and at some point had received a really bad nose job. On my way to making all of this right. On the agenda after the paint work is new TB, acc drive belts, AC recharge, new fluids and hoses. What else?

Clean all the grounds and replace all the flexible fuel lines and vacuum lines

Looks great and welcome.
All pressured fuel hoses need to be replaced if original. |

Well, this one was a scam. I found out at the last minute the mileage was bogus. Stay away from this one.

Mileage isn't a big deal if the car is between $1,500 and $2,000. I wouldn't pay much more for it. $2000 is a good price for a running 928 needing plenty of work. That one needs plenty of work.

Sorry to hear it, 928 best car ever built, least reliable odometer ever built.
Post the VIN if you have it for reference. Despite the deal going sour, any further details on the car? |

CARFAX returned three hits: initial title in 1985, 2,675 miles titled in TN in 1987, no mileage Porsche recall AK01 not fulfilled1989 Needs $3500 of body repair to front end and lt rear qtr asking 12k which I was willing to pay for a bonified 1-owner 24k mi car. mileage is low but probably close to 60-70k mi the car sat for 5 years so every seal needs to be replaced, fluids purged, etc. Again, I was willing to do this if the car was as represented. Seems like there is a lot of shady business in the 928 world. The one I'm looking at now is really nice but shows a total loss after "moderate" damage was reported. I know how that can happen, I wrecked my 2000 CLK430 and drove it to the body shop but the damage was more than a certain percentage of the cars book value. totaled! Someone got themselves a really nice CLK from the insurance co. How can I get info on the VIN of the present candidate? |

Sorry to hear it didn't work out. Definitely keep looking though, it's a very fun car to own. Since you're retired it'll definitely be something that'll keep you busy.
Good luck!

AutoCheck shows 5 records, but TN as I recall isn't one of the states that keeps track of mileage. Owner has no records to back up the claimed miles?
24K miles should look essentially new with very little sign of any wear, and no damage of any kind. 50k miles shouldn't be much different $12k needing body work and after sitting is dreaming. Totaled by insurance on the carfax and its a drug induced dream. Have you put your eyes on the car, points in its favor its black which is easy to paint. Major points off for burgundy interior, its about the second to least popular. |

"Have you put your eyes on the car, points in its favor its black which is easy to paint. Major points off for burgundy interior, its about the second to least popular." Yeah, I saw the car and took those pictures(above). Major let down when he pulled the cover off and I saw the undisclosed body damage. Yet I gave him the benefit of a doubt. When I found the odometer hasn't worked in many years and he had absolutely no mileage documentation I couldn't run fast enough. Contrast that to now when I am looking at an 87 with 67k miles and is in absolutely beautiful condition. It does have a insurance co total loss on its carfax but I am not all that leery about that. I have a porsche specialist doing a ppi on it next week. Wish me luck. |

Porsche specialist very often isn't a 928 specialist, so wishing you a LOT of luck. Every chance I get I watch Greg Brown in Anaheim Calif do a PPI, freaking amazing what I've seen him catch that most shops would never notice.
About half the PPI I prefer to do myself with a helper, no point in paying to see if the horn works, windows go up and down or all the bulbs are OK. Once the car is on the rack the fun really begins, and you can get a feel for how the car has been maintained. BTW are you sure about which 928 you want? |

I learned that the big red flag when looking into mileage on any older 80s VW and Audis is a low mileage odometer with a trip meter reading 000.0. This means the odometer quit working a long time ago and in desperation someone hit the trip reset in an attempt make it work again. People will even say "Oh the odometer just quit working last week!"
I've always been a sucker for red interiors, not sure why burgundy is so unpopular with the Porsche crowd but that isn't the first time I have seen it said about that color. |

My favorite combo is white with tan interior (cork). Don't like red interior....never have, don't know why....

I happen to like my burgundy interior as well. Unfortunately the dash and instrument pod has it's normal cracks and there are no replacements. The same goes for the steering wheel, and nearly anything else for the interior in that color. I would also question if the paint is original on the car above. Seeing a black 928 with a burgundy interior is not very common. Most of the black cars that I've seen have black interior.
