Paint Removal

Just started to strip the paint on the old boy. Crikey! there are three repaints on this car. To top it off, I think the last one was Cheap Lacquer! I'm having to chem strip the roof, hopefully the rest of the car I can DA sand. Let this be a lesson: keep the intellectually challenged away from painting equipment.

Lots of work there I know. I used a razor scrapper. Peeled it like a grape. May help it go faster. Also you will be surprised how well 80 grit on a DA works. Lift the big stuff with aircraft stripper and go at it.

Subscribed.

All Strippers are not created equal, use the stuff Tony used if you can find it.

A lot of work, mine took 4 coats (i couldn't find his stuff)

Dean Fuller's suggestion is a good one, use razors.

Good luck and wear eye protection.

I used some aircraft stripper obtained from a local autoparts store, (awful stuff that). It still took 2 applications though. If possible I will DA sand as much of the body as possible.

I can't believe no one made a Stripper joke. You guys awake?

2 applications is very good, keep using that stuff.

Are you taking the car apart, i.e. fenders, doors, hatch removed etc.. You should.

It will turn out so much better

Tisk, tisk Ron, you're a married man.

Back on paint...

What i do when faced with a task such as this is set up a radio while working

and just keep imagining how nice it will be when finished.

I really like red OBs.

I meant paint strippers, or was it wire strippers?

I will be doing this soon myself....but it seems like my paint is peeling off on its own....weird...

Best strip club I ever landed in was called the "The Mousetrap".
The "talent" wasn't that great but the place was about 10 feet wide and they performed while hanging on bars attached to the ceiling.
Good times, previous life.

I like the Guardsman Red as well, however...I bought a hood from Mike (Danglerb), that is a candy-maroon color. I liked it so much, that my repaint color is a darker shade (Burgundy metallic)

Any progress Kerry? I like that Ron Burgundy Metallic, but if your changing the color, that opens up a world of choices.

My next 928 restoration will be Viper Green or Gulf Orange.

Coral red is a beautiful 928 color imo.

I was painting this Easter weekend, a branch fell from 45 feet at least on the hood.

didn't dent it but marred the paint.

Drilled rivet heads and removed hood pin trims, peeled Porsche crest,
wet sanded with 400 -600 gt and repainted.

Looks pretty good.

Missed Hershey though

I'm still sanding it. I only used stripper on the roof due to the amount of filler, and paint (1/8" in places). I have done the first pass on the body with 80 grit, I plan to use 120, 180, 220, and 400 progressively. I'm not looking for a concours paint job, (doing it in my garage) Just something presentable.

Looking great I bet...need more pix!

If I may interject something here....At some point you will need to use a longer flat sanding block. Working with the long side parallel to body length and work in a "X" sanding pattern. That is how you get it FLAT. The DA is just to strip old paint...you can not get a flat surface with a DA.

Smooth does not mean flat.

If this is old news then I apologize for being "captain obvious".

I guess I should have said that the 180 grit on up would be by hand

I hope my comment did not insult your knowledge of body work. Certainly was not my intent. We all have seen fresh paint on non flat panels. I wish my move to Vegas was already a done deal...I would be happy to help out.

Please keep the pix coming. Progress on a home grown paint job is always interesting to watch.

No offense taken, I welcome all the help I can get! I look forward to meeting up with you.
BTW- My intent on this paintjob is for it to look presentable, not flawless, (my car is just a driver.) I will reserve that devotion for my future S4, or GT

Paint removal/sanding is complete. Ferdinand is now ready for removal of the few trim pieces left on it, followed by masking, and primer.
I hope to shoot it this coming weekend.
