Cold start problems
 

I have some intermittent cold start issues. About twice now in last month i have got no start on cold start up. Turns over ok and getting fuel. Both times i have been able to get it going with simply waiting and starting later. It has only let me down in the garage.

I had previously cleaned all grounds and this time replaced critlcal ignition relays. Previous symptoms included some hesitation periodically until warmed up. Driving conservatively until warm up worked well. No issues at operating temp.

I suspect temp II sensor. I checked the ohms at 5700-6000 at ambient (15c) which is close to spec i believe but it read 3200 ohms at operating temp - which is far too high.

Any second opinions? Could it be maf or other sensor(s)?

Sounds like Temp II to me.

I just had the same problem with my 84. I'm not sure what year yours is but as long as it's not a 78, 79 or Euro CIS machine it will most likely be your thermo temp switch. It is mounted horizontally just in front of and below the temp 11 switch. The thermo temp switch fires up your cold start injector on ignition. It it fails then you have no cold start injector. The temp II upon failing will cause rich running because the cold start injector won't shut off at all.

Its an 86 euro with Australian spec 28.45 engine. I know the standard WSM and parts CD I have list a temp time switch but I cannot positively find one on this engine - or I am possibly confusing it with the temp gauge sensor. There is a horizontal sensor off the thermostat housing just behind the engine bay cross member - but this one doesn't have the electrical connection like the temp 2 sensor has and what is shown in the WSM, but a simple two prong.

I will take a further look tonight when I get home - if I find one, I will order two new sensors and replace both.

No temp time switch sensor on the thermostat housing. Only temp 2 and temp gauge. Will replace temp 2 if i can find one. Different part number listing for this engine than most others.

Not sure what the one is behind the temp II switch.

Yeah - I don't have that one in your last picture. See below. I got the temp II which is left of the filler cap, the vertical gauge sensor which is right of the cap and left of the fuel regulator and then there is a horizontal one at 2 o'clock position above the filler cap that actually goes into the air intake. I would put arrows on the picture pointing to these if I knew how :D

I'm not sure that LH equipped cars have that thermo time sensor. I know the Stepson ('84 Euro) doesn't have it.

Hmmm....And yet another mystery. :eek:

Changed the temp II sensor last week and cold start/driving issues are gone - so far.:D

It is always good news when you solve these problems for under $100!

84 Euro is LH2.2, US 84 is Ljet. 86 Euro 32v is basically same as US 86 32v except lower compression for less smog or something.
