2 car lift
Howdy all. Start building on new house in a few weeks. trying to figure out what 2 car lift has shown to be the best fit for a 928 and a 968.
Standard 2 car garage. 20x 22. total ceiling height is 9'9. with 8ft. to bottom of garage door track. if I need to I will change out doors to a roll up, or get the tracks to ride closer to the ceiling. It is not needed, but I will try to have extra footers poured at the base plate locations. I guess the main question is how far back from the garage door opening does it need to be anchored to give me enough clearance to have one car on the lift and another under, without hitting the roof with garage door. But, I am looking for any and all experiences with lift installations, styles, and types.. thnx John |

You problem is height. You'll need to find a low one. There is nothing in a 2 post for the 8'. You may get something under the 9 9 but it will be tight.
As far as clearance there is symmetrical and asymmetrical lifts that would have different locations. (Its basically where the arms are in relation to the posts) Most companies don't recommend storage of a car on a 2 post. If it's mostly for that I would go with a nice 4 post. You won't have to worry about opening a door into a post either.

Take a look at this forum for many discussions on lifts. Link is to Garage Journal, no idea why it says pelican.
Pelican Parts Technical BBS - Powered by vBulletin Strictly for storage nothing beats a drive on lift, usually a 4 post, but its the worst for doing "most" work. Wheels don't hang down like they do on a arm lift, so better clearance from that, but the ramp mechanism is several inches thick, so a bit of a push on height issues. For working on the car you will want a "bridge jack" that goes between the ramps and lets you raise the wheels off the ramp for all the wheels off type work. 8 foot is 96 inches which is going to be TIGHT. Backing the top car in helps so you only need the clearance for the hood, not the roof. Putting the garage door as high as possible, or at a "key" height may be essential. I looked at wacky options like only raising or lowering the car with the garage door closed, with the door in the open position and car raised going under the lift. |
