Looked At A 928 4 Sale Today

A 928 came up on craigslist a few days ago and the guy finally called me back today. Its an 84 guards red automatic with brown interior. Its not too bad, the ignition switch is hooked up to a button with wires from the dash so right away I'm getting turned off but it did crank and had a miss till I let it warm up then seemed to clear. The paint is worn to the sealer on all the edges from buffing and had a ladder fall on the window pillar causing dents and deep scratches but it is original paint. The tranny is leaking really bad around the little reservoir under the car. It did run through all the gears while at idle and applying brake. The engine really did sound smooth and quiet once it was warmed up a little. He wants 3000 but I think he would take $2500. Im going to pass even though its not that bad looking its just not nice enough for me to take the plunge. Its a driver he says but you have to add tranny fluid all the time. I wonder if its ever ran out of fluid while driving, that wouldn't be good. I already have a 911 and 914 but to be honest the 928 was my dream car when little. I so want one. I have one more to look at tomorrow that may be in better condition. Its chocolate brown metallic and that's cool with me.

Good call. You will find a better example. That tranny leak is scary!

Sometimes the best deals are the ones you didn't make.

If your local area doesn't pan out, don't be shy about looking nationwide. My 928 came from clear acoss the country.

Trans Leaks -

Hey Mike, The 4 speed auto-transmission in the 928's are actually pretty tough but are known for their leaks and seeps without some attention. Both cars I bought would initially require a major top off each week and go through a 2 gallon jug of automatic transmission fluid like crap through a goose.

Luckily, my transmission fluid cooling lines at both ends were in good shape and a new pan gasket eliminated the majority of the problem. While the pan was empty, I inspected the plastic reservoir and it's cap for any damage or cracks. Then during the reinstallation of the reservoir I used red gasket sealer on the plastic wing nut threads that connects the metal fluid line to the pan. It was the lid or cap seal to the reservoir that turned out to be the source of my final seepage. I cut out a circular piece of soft rubber (about the size of a silver dollar) that fit just inside the cap. Once everything had been snugged down - my transmission fluid now stays within the normal operating range for months on end before I need to touch it up a bit.

If I ever have the torque converter out for any reason I'll install a new T/C seal.

Good Luck, Michael

Lot of 928's are getting close to end of driving season in some areas, and that may make prices more flexible than you might imagine. Make a cash offer so the spouse can see the money in your hands, then wait for the call back if the seller doesn't take it on the spot.

*** Not endorsing making an offer on this one, just a general suggestion. Buy one that you really like, that has some irresistible feature because at some point later on you need to want to keep it more than push it off a cliff.

Good one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Been down that road.

Buy the best one you can afford of course but if necessary add a little more to the kitty to get what you want. A better experience.
