1979 928 garage find
I just bought a 1979 garage stored (not run in 15 years) 928. supposedly it's a runner?? I've been trying to track down engine and trans parts with not a lot of luck. I'm looking for an engine rebuild kit, (if available) main bearings seem to be the big issue, also 5 speed manual trans parts the 1st gear sycro is bad would like to rebuild or at least replace the syncros and bearings?? can anyone advise me on where to find parts, and also those parts that.... As long as your going that far might as well replace those parts??? any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also a windshield the one on the car has a crack, I can get a used one in AZ. but they won't ship?? Thanks |

Why not just let the windshield installer source one for you? I had one replaced a while back and the whole cost was $165 installed.
If it's a runner, then why rebuild the engine? Doubtful to me that your car will need main bearings. Replace the rubber fuel lines and the vacuum lines under the hood. Clean the injectors. Clean all the grounds in the car (see the WSM for those locations) Replace the fuel pump relay and the ignition relay. Drain the fuel from the tank and replace. Don't just replace the battery and turn the key on. 15 years of bad gas and varnish and whatnot will clog up your fuel distributor and cause much more work for you in the long run. Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice, I've been told that before about the engine. will probably do that, but the trans is a different story, Pelican has some of the parts but 1st gear syncro seems to be the one that fails the most and the hardest to find.
Also the windshield I went to a local chain and he couldn't find it anywhere doing a nation wide search??? Not sure where to go from here |

Go to a different windshield installer. Seriously, the chain probably looked only within THEIR system. Windshields are out there, believe me.

SouthernCross- Post your location. Perhaps someone in your area can help you come up with a to-do list.

You might just look into getting a replacement engine versus rebuilding. I guess it depends on what rebuilding means. If you have issues with the lower end it will be costly to rebuild. I am in a similar situation with a 78. The rings were stuck to pistons and there was scoring in one cylinder. No compression. I could probably put it back together with new rings and seals but I found a running parts car for $800. It is a pretty easy decision and lots of other useable parts as well.

I've watched an expert rebuild half a dozen 928 transmissions, it takes an experienced eye to know which parts need replacing, but its a cinch its going to be more than the synchro, dog teeth go fast once the synchros wear much. Talk to 928 International | Porsche 928 Parts for Sale Online - New, Used & Rebuilt or 928srus to get a better idea of needed parts.
Sitting 15 years chances are very high the old coolant has eaten away at various parts of the engine and heads, no way to tell without pulling the heads. Any special reason for picking this project car? |

I found a windshield on eBay for $250 brand new (have not bought it yet), and they are a nationwide manufacturer. Even had free shipping if you pick up at one of their hubs, one of which is near me, so they are out there.

Also beware of Chinese glass, wavey etc, only go with the Porsche OEM brand, Pilkington or something starting with an Sigla.
