It's been a while, but I think 4 bolts/ or nuts, the 2-hydraulic lines , the steering joint and unscrew the tie rods after removing boots. they sale a rebuilt kit for the rack

On the 1 to 10 scale, 1 being nothing on a 928, and 10 almost certain loss of blood and increase in vocabulary, steering rack reseal is about an 8. Find a guide before starting.

Don't know if there have been significant changes over the years but the '82 Shop Manual outlines everything you need to know about power steering pumps in Section 48 (Chassis Volume).

I replaced the steering rack on the Stepson as one of my first go-rounds of catching up on deferred maintenance. Removed it just fine and had a rebuilt replacement ready to go right back in. Slid it up into place and the splines from the steering wheel shaft assembly slid right into place. I started bolting it up and thought to myself, "That was WAY too easy, something must be wrong". I took the rack back out to check everything out, realized that everything was okay and started to put the rack back in place. The splines from the steering wheel shaft would not line up now. Took another 3 hours to get those damn things lined up to slide in correctly. Huge waste of 3 hours second guessing myself. I'm sure you'll have better luck.
