Calcium battery????
my shark needs a new battery and was thinking of going to a calcium calcium one due to the time it spends off the road and the low discharging of this type of battery. A friend has just told me they need higher voltage (14v I think) to charge correctly.
Is this true and if so will my standard alternator charge it?

Buy a good brand normal battery. Experiment on a car where electrical issues aren't the main problem.

Just A Battery Comment -
Hey Callum, I think there are currently 4 or 5 serious contenders for maintenance free car batteries available including the calcium-calcium design. Although as a consumer we normally pick our poison according to price, cranking amps, recharge time, over all life, etc..... there are lots of other internal technical hocus-pocus and material issues beyond our evaluation process. For me the basic pro and con reasons for buying anything automotive normally boils down to "will it be worth the money".
This spring I had decided to upgrade my battery and did some comparison shopping of the various designs. From what I'd read the Calcium-Calcium battery had some recharging issues that caused a stratification (top to bottom layering difference in electrolyte charge) between the pos-neg plates and some models had a short term drop in available current. Personally I bought one of the sealed XS Power D3400 XS Series 3,300 Amp AGM High Output Battery for Miss Purdy as a trial run. They were list priced @ about $450 but I found them on sale for about $260 with free shipping at Amazon . There is a $14 Brass Post Adapter/Extension Kit - that is needed to connect the standard (old style) battery leads. I think the sale is still active - Amazon.com: XS Power D3400 XS Series 12V 3,300 Amp AGM High Output Battery with M6 Terminal Bolt: Automotive As technology improves there will also be some serious money in the pocket of who ever successfully develops a powerful enough storage battery platform that can reliably propell an in-town electric car and compete with the piston engine. Until then there is talk of bumping our next generation automotive electrical systems to 24 volts to support all the computers, hands-free driving stuff and telecommunication systems coming down the pike. The good and the bad news is that the spin off upgrades have produced significant improvements to the 12 volt car battery that are supposed to dove tail right into the automobile manufacturer's strategy to prevent an owner from even opening the hood on a new car. Some automotive digests have mentioned federal legislation being pushed by lobbyist on the grounds of EPA, Global Warming, Owner Safety and Dealer Profits to prevent a customer from doing any more than owning the car. With an estimated avg sale price of around $59,000 for these disposable vehicles - buying a new car won't be too bad - If you can say that many "0's" real fast and have a bite down stick handy ...... ![]() Good Luck With Your Battery Selection, Michael
