1989 Porsche 928 S4 - Digital Odometer Repair Help
I have a 1989 Porsche 928 S4 and the digital odometer unit failed. I've had it replaced with a factory unit, but the odometer reading began at 000000 instead of being programmed with the car's actual mileage.
Does anyone know a speedometer/odometer repair shop that can wind the mileage up to the correct number? I have documentation of the unit swap, mileage, etc. and because it's 25 years old, its mileage is exempt. In the past I've used North Hollywood Speedometer or Palo Alto Speedometer, however they no longer have any techs that have the right software for winding up the mileage. Any other reputable shops you can refer me to? Thanks in advance. ![]() |

Somewhere in the WSM is the instruction for setting initial mileage on a new digital ODO. You have to do it pretty soon after you install it. I'm not handy to the manuals so can't quote the exact procedure, but it's in there.
Failing tha, somewhere in my archives is the instructions for reprogramming the chip that stores the miles. It's on the back of the instrument cluster, so the pod comes loose and to the rear a little, then lift for access. It can be programmed in place I think, but it's probably sfer to install a DIP socket for the chip, and either burn a new one with the correct miles, or reprogram the one you have. The chips havea limited number of rewrites, and the latest reading is burned every time you shut the engine off. Ancient software for the external programmer, needs WIN98 or something similarly archaic for it to run, and from an actual serial port.
