Colour-change or not?
 

My 1978 needs a repaint - badly!

It currently has a poor tape-'n-spray (done by a degenerate monkey high on weed sometime in the 90's) in the factory Silver Metallic.

With no rub strips, no spoilers, and no sunroof it looks clean in silver, but also kinda dull. It doesn't stand out, like a 928 deserves to, especially in Denmark where the skies are oh so grey and 80% of cars are silver metallic.

So - would it be completely idiotic to change the colour of an otherwise original '78? In regards to future value?

Minerva Blue, Guards Red and Light Green are all strong contenders in my book.

Please advice - what is your favourite colour on a clean OB? Interior is black, so (almost) anything goes :)

as far as future value - yea it would probably drop a bit - but so what? - if you want the car a different color and are planning on keeping it I say go for it - but just be aware that to do it right it's either a lot of money or a lot of work - the door jambs and interiors have to be sprayed as does the underside of hood and engine compartment as well as rear hatch jambs - I changed the color of two cars in my life and won't do it again - nice car you have there

I say no, don't change from the original color. The only way to do it correctly is pull the engine, the doors, the windows, etc. It can be a real PITA.

Silver with no rub strips looks really clean and can mask a lot of imperfections. I say leave it silver.

I understand your opportunity...so many colors to choose from. What is best is obviously same color as has been pointed out.

However, you drive/live with the car so make it the way you like.

I have Opal Metallic which looks like "Gold", and need to do what you want to do. Not sure when I'll get to it and an interior refresh. That "Titanium" looking paint is nice when clean particularly with nice shiny wheels with good black shoes...I have similar on my 540i.

Green is becoming popular again and the light green you show is nice on the 928, I have Taiga Green on my coupe (3.0csi) and love it on that car.

I'm also thinking about wrapping, but it's a $2k job here, and then the paint would still be bad (but correct color), when I pull it off again.

But I saw a GTS wrapped in light green, and it looked spectacularly good.

Maybe repaint it silver and protect with a wrap? Only $7-10k .......

Your 928 looks great in silver but as you say it is grey in Denmark. In sunny san diego that is a great color. I wish mine looked as good as yours does in the pic. Good luck in what ever you choose.

Pictures can be deceiving - the base coat is cracked or scratched in millions of places underneath a poor clear coat :( Looks ok from 15-20 feet.

Its twice as much work or more to do a color change depending on where you leave the old paint. I have no tolerance for mediocre paint, fairly bad I can actually live with, nice at 10 feet with mismatched door jambs, bleh.
