Dismantle and disposial of a 78

First I cut the two cross section in front of the radiator.

Then cut just in front of the engine crossmember and rack.

Then cut behind the crossmember, try to miss the area where the two bolt holes are for the upper a-arm...since there is a reenforcement there...and cutting was difficult. I ran into it on the one side...and it was a tough-sum-bic*h.

Then I cut the roof off, four pillars...no biggy.

Quarter panels next.
After removing whatever parts I wanted to keep and sell...it was time to get rid of the rest.

By moving to the back of the car it keeps things balanced on the jackstands. Cut the center section in back first, all the way through the battery box hole into the tunnel, then work your way to the sides, ending up in the lower back corner of the door.

Try and stay behind both of these rear suspension body brackets...if not...you have some work ahead of you.

Cut the rest of the quarter panels and rear seat area off.

Then the floor was cut away. Pretty easy cutting here, but it was time for the cherry-picker for stability reasons.

The dash assembly was kind of tricky in spots, since I wanted to save the heater core and evaporator...which I accomplished.

Tried saving the clutch pedal assembly, too. A friend in CO wants it.

Just about gone!

Two and a half hours later...old red...is back where she belongs!!!

Sorry about some of the pictures quality...even after I let go of the saws-all...my hands were still vibrating as if it was still there...lol.

Tomorrow, the garage floor will get cleaned and parts will make it all the way out to the storage shed.

Brian.

Hard to believe, even for me...that this was the car Sunday afternoon. Doors, engine, hatch, dash, front suspension, all glass, etc, etc...still in it.

And now it is in a heap next to the garage (and will loaded onto my buddies scrap trailer tomorrow)...and old red and old blacky are back together again.

Been a busy two days for this old man...

If anyone is looking for something for a 78...let me know...I may have it....cheap.

I've heard a blade for the Sawzall called the Torch works well.

Guys in SoCal are happy to pick up if not pay for the whole old chassis, and only cut them if you don't have a pink slip, so except for a few items I have no plans to cut on mine when it goes.

years ago when I was into opel gt's I was buying parts from a guy who had 7 of them all complete - he also had 3-4 more being disassembled - he had a gas powered 10 inch saw that he cut them up with - he told me he could cut the car up in about an hour and then he would visit dumpsters behind grocery stores and toss the pieces in there - illegal I know, but a novel way to rid yourself of carcasses - that was fast work getting rid of that car deputy

It even surprised me how fast and easy it went. In all, if I wouldn't have been cleaning my hands to take pictures (which turned into a short break...and to the house for a coffee refill)...it would have only taken an hour or so.

I used two different length saw blades, a short four inch and a eight inch.

Heck, having the three grand kids (ages 1, 3 and 7) over for the last three days was a ton more work...talk about being a tired puppy this morning...lol.
