'84 928 Water Pump Replacement

I'm thinking of replacing my timing belt along with tensioners and water pump. The price for water pumps are all over the map starting from $80 to an astounding $700 for a Lasso. They all appear physically the same in photos with metal impellers but what can account for such a vast price spread, are the more expensive pumps worth it? Thank you for your responses.

The Lasos should have a plastic impeller and a special sleeve to prevent shaft/impeller migration. The others? I don't know.

But.... the only Laso pump still available I believe, is the the pump for the older cars, which is another thing altogether since the older pump can used on the newer engines wiht the installation of the Porkension'r.

When I did the TB and pump job 4 years ago I paid $350 for a new Laso pump with plastic impeller. I probably could have left the original pump in since the car only had 37K miles, but I did it anyway.

I did Timing belt jobs on 3 of my cars this year. I replaced water pumps on 2 of the cars since there was a failure of that component on those cars, and resealed the oil pumps and replaced the front main seal on all 3. The GTS had a Porsche water pump on it that had no play in the shaft and spun freely, so I did not replace it while doing the timing belt. 3 months later, the water pump shaft seal dumped all the coolant out on the garage floor one morning when I started it.(It was a bad morning)

I'm not saying to replace the water pump every timing belt job, but just relaying my experience. I probably won't replace the water pumps on these 3 cars on my next timing belt replacement, but I sure as heck will look very closely at them.

I believe the Laso pumps for the older cars with the plastic impeller can still be had for under $500.

I see some pumps are available for +/- $50. I would rather play in a basket of drunken rattlesnakes than install one of those on my 928. Stick with Lasso from one of our sponsoring vendors...pick one who knows 928's well and will talk to you about the process...
