Lost low beam headlights

1979 row 928 has lost both low beam lights. About a year ago, we had the same problem with the high beams - replacing the relay high beam solved the problem. But what relay operates the low beams? Is it the main headlight relay?

I've found about four different relay/fuse charts and they are all different.

Any help is appreciated - thanks!

Most often you can just R & R ( Remove and replace ) the relays ( Headlight ) and they well work . Bad connections are the cause

Many are type 53 relays. My car has a detailed chart in the cover of the CE panel, showing relays and fuses. Hopefully you have the chart.

That's what I was saying, every chart I see shows something different. Was hoping to learn which relay to check.

Well of course the model years are different and I guess your chart is missing in the CE panel cover for your car. One thing you can do is pull the relays and clean the contacts in the panel. It may be just a dirty contact. Hopefully you can get the correct layout for your car. I just went and replaced all the type 53 relays which are pretty cheap. I have a feeling the head light one might be a 53 type. When you turn your low beam on, do you hear a relay click??

I would lean toward relay XIV (5th relay on the top from the right) 928.615.123.00

I did not see a single 53 relay listed as standard anywhere on the 77-79 relay chart at
928gt.com.

OK, I thought possibly there was some similarity, but guess not. My car is an 86. Sometimes you can open up the relay and clean the contacts unless the coil is shot. Best to just replace if this is the problem.

Up to MY 85, most all the relays were job specific relays, which couldn't be interchanged.

Starting in '85, Porsche finally figured out that they could use generic (53) relays in most instances. Specific one that comes to mind is the fuel pump relay. Finally became a generic relay starting in 1985.

I can't figure out what took them so long to do this.

This is what is was looking for, thank you. I recently removed each fuse and relay and cleaned all the connections with Deoxit. My biggest problem was the fuel pump relay, the connectors had slip out of the panel so when I pushed the relay in, it was pushing the connectors out the back.

Slow and steady.....

You are very welcome.

What might have happened is the tang on the female spade has gotten mashed into the body of the female spade. The tang is the little raised part that grabs the plastic part of the connector and prevents it from being pushed out. If you loosen the CE panel and lay it down, you can probably fix the tangs one by one and carefully reinstall the wires and female spades back into their appropriate connector location.

If the tangs are not damaged, do a search for a replacement connector block for that relay. They are available.
