Bluemane those wheels are FANTASTIC. That's the way Porsche should have finished them in the first place, though your materials are probably more advanced than what was available then.
Can't spend right now, unfortunately, but these would be excellent. I like to keep the original look and this type of wheel is extremely strong. Plus, for touring and general driving the ride is so much better with the 16's. I've got 18's on an 84 Euro with bilsteins and stock springs. It corners flat, but you feel every bump in the road. These you show would be a huge improvement. Good luck with the sale.

They do look great but appear to be painted instead of the aluminum showing. Some may prefer that.

Kind of depends on the condition of the anodization layer. They say its real difficult to strip it to polish the wheels.
I think the paint is similar to the process used on many wheels today, so its different, but in a reasonable way. (just opinion / preferences like you indicate)

its true the wheels are painted,, first all the anodizing was blasted off i use crushed glass for my media, then an etching primer is put on followed by a 2k primer, any imperfections are then repaired, followed by another 2k primer, after final water sanding in 800 grit the base coat is laid on, followed by a urethane clear coat, all my products are imported from germany, i use spies hecker line,, the wheels are oven baked at 160 degrees for thirty minutes, same way i refinish cars, product for this type of work is very expensive, but with a coat of wax brake dust just falls off unlike the laborous aluminum wheel sanded and polished,, i can sand and clear aluminum wheels also but they have to be perfect,,, find 30 year old perfect wheels? i bought these wheels while i was refinishing my phone dials, i paid 400 with some lousy tires, anyways i had to keep the car moveable,so when i was done with my car ,i had some free time so i restored these wheels,i usually get 200 per wheel to refinish , so add that 800 to the 400 i spent and what do you have? i will sell the wheels for 500 plus the shipping to a fellow 928 enthusiast, i believe one wheel is worth 600, here is a pic of my phone dials refinished, no comparison to a factory wheel, neither is the paint on my car , we didnt have the technology of these products 30 years ago,btw a strip and refinish in my shop usually use 2500 -3k in materials alone

You are way too local to not take advantage and great work BTW. I just received a spare set of rims, same set that you started the thread with... Not sure when but when it's time, I'll be in touch.

not sure if you followed the whole thread Wrentham but if you have the same set of wheels and you want them refinished the cost is 200 per wheel, i will give you the set of four already done for five hundred, unless you need larger wheels , the ones i have are all 16x7,, you are close enough to pick them up,and you can see alot of interesting work in progress while you are there,,peace

Resurrecting an old thread to stay on topic
Picked up a set of staggered 928 manhole covers cheap, three are aluminum in acceptable finish, and the 4th is painted metallic gray (looks like factory) Are the painted manhole covers painted OVER anodization, or are they bare aluminum underneath? If anodized i'll strip them and clean them up to match, otherwise the plastidip comes out. |
