Loctite 574 anaerobic sealant

I sealed the two parts of my crankcase with Loctite 574 anaerobic sealant, which is what the repair manual called for. I torqued everything to spec.

That was a few weeks ago now and I had to pull it all apart again yesterday to check something.

I was surprised to see that the sealant had apparently not cured - it seemed to be a similar consistency as when I put it all together.

Is this right or should it harden? I realise any that is still exposed to air will stay fairly fluid and sticky but was expecting it to have cured on the sealing surfaces.

It should have hardened. I recently did this same job but check my 574 first by using it on an old piece. it was pretty much cured the next day. Where did you get it from, maybe it was old? It has a shelf life.

The sealant will stay soft except when its placed in an airless joint,
this so the squeezout will be washed away with the hot oil.

To remove the cured sealant try using some acetone and a razor blade held perpendicular to the surface,
do a back and forth motion you should see a white powder come off the separated parts.

Stan,
His post says he assembled the girdle and when he took it apart at a later date it still hadn't hardened? I'm thinking the stuff he has is old. If I'm not mistaken this stuff has a 20-30 minute working time and then it starts to set up and when pressed between the case and girdle it should harden in a da or so. At least that's my experience.

Thanks guys. Definitely sounds like it didn't work properly. Glad now that I did pull it apart again. The Loctite 574 was not easy to get hold of up here in Canada so I doubt anyone who stocks it sells that much of it - it might have been old.

Is there an equivalent product? A machine shop I go to suggested Permatex anaerobic sealant.

I bought a bunch once on ebay, mixed views talking to mechanics on life, so I have decided if I will end up eventually using it. For sure, test it on something.

I have used it on ZF trans cases, and never had a problem. Hell, even used the leftover sealing the case on a Harley Davidson on a rebuild. Was the case leaking??

I got some more Loctite 574 from the local Porsche dealer and tested it by applying some to a small area of the crankcase mating surface and torquing it up. I left it for a full 24 hours (it's cold here right now) and it looked like it had cured when I pulled it apart. After cleaning the surfaces again I did the complete job again. Sure it cures properly this time.

What I learned from this is to buy it from a source that is likely not to have their stock go out of date. There is nothing on the original tube that indicates how old it is. Regardless of where you get it, test it on a small area first.

Just as this stuff is great on fuel line and other metal to metal sealing, it also performs the same magic on sealing the threads of the AC system if applied with care.
