Cheap 1985 928 Parts - Denver, CO

Hey, I was perusing our local Upull and Pay junk yard in Denver, CO and came across a 1985 928. I know nothing about these cars but I wanted to pass along the info. I have photos but Pelican says they are too big... I get that a lot.

Depending on what the lot charges, you might be able to flip a number of parts at a decent profit. Shame these ever hit a pick a part mostly due to what goes to the crusher that could be used.

that engine is worth a pretty penny, but i have a feeling the yard knows that too. If it is running a manual. YOU NEED TO PULL THAT asap. serious $$ to be made

Is it a non sunroof model? I need a roof.. lol

I use 928 international as a rough guide to parts value along with ebay completed listings. Usually a private seller can get between a 1/4 and 1/3 of 928Intl's price. The catch being that some items take a long long time to sell as a private or even ebay seller.

Three factors; whats the part worth, how much work to remove, and how much trouble is it to sell. Course the big on is what it the junk yard pricing like, and that can be hard to know before you have a load of stuff ready to go through the gate.

Here is a short list to make a trip worthwhile;

Both brains, LH and EZ
Pod and cluster
CE panel
Any tools or manuals or factory radio
MAF and air cleaner box (not the filter), air tubes if good shape.
Speaker grill covers if factory.
Exhaust manifolds unless a pain to remove.
All the switches

all the above is true - especially the take a long time to sell part - I have a 79 engine that I've been trying to sell for 2 years - probably going to disassemble it in the spring - the problem is shipping some of the bigger heavier things - not a whole lot of these cars I Denver from what I see so local sales are slow - but if you have the time and storage space you can make some money - just be prepared for it to be a long term capital gain

If you can buy the car outright, pre junk yard, then bone it like a chicken leaving nothing but twisted chassis behind, but once its in a yard, its mostly an issue of yard prices and effort to remove.

Early motors, 4.5L rarely sell. Local guy has a never run rebuilt 4.5L he hasn't been able to get a grand for, and has had it more than a decade. Nobody cares about matching numbers, which 928's don't have other than some wide range on serial numbers, and its not that much more money to get a 4.7L and more power.

I just followed the link, looked at the pictures, its been picked over hard, everything easy to remove has been it looks like. Since its still there guessing the yard wants too much for the motor, might be worthwhile to make them an above scrap value offer for motor, torque tube, and transmission, like $200 or so for all of it.

Thanks. I am headed back next week for other parts. This yard is dirt cheap. They have set prices, regardless of the make and model. For example, a bumper cover is $39.00, whether it is from a Porsche or Ford Escort.

Here is there price guide. Let me know if you want something specific.

Maf and intake is an easy sell. I sold my spare to some guy in turkey for around a grand. LOL!!

Complete motor, drive shaft, and transmission are worth pulling, drop the whole thing from the top, but shipping is too costly intact, to sell other than local you would need to pull heads etc on the motor., but a lot of bits still on it would sell on ebay.

Typical price on a used maf and intake is more like $200. I bought spare maf's as cores a couple years ago and got all I wanted for about $75 each shipped. All of them needed a rebuild when tested, and some came from running cars. Intakes are slow sells, mostly go as time savers to people who paint or powder coat then swap onto their car and sell the old set.

Sending you a PM

Maybe interested in the complete heads and intake manifold, pending price.

The cams in this engine are worth a few hundred by themselves.

Lot price guide shows $265 plus I think $25 core for a complete engine, not leaving much room unless all the parts get sold off it.

well I visited this car today - I went out there looking for small things (molding, trim pieces and such) - when I got there I see the exhaust has already been cut off - so i'm thinking since I converted the 84 from auto to manual and my parts are old i'll try to pull the clutch pack out - it came out easy enough - then i'm looking at the tranny since mine is a 79 and they are known for bad synchros maybe if it's not too hard to remove the bolts i'd go for it - this yard does not allow any jacks on the premises - some sort of insurance thing - so the only way I can see to pull it is to remove all but the last two bolts and then let it drop - I separated the tube and axles from the tranny and the tranny from the crossmember and left the outside crossmember bolts til last - well it all dropped softly since the crossmember trailing arms wouldn't slip out - getting the tranny untangled and back over the crossmember was difficult and when it did come loose suddenly it landed on my hand - so i'm sitting here with a swollen hand but I don't think I broke anything - the car has been pretty much picked over - the CE panel is there but all relays are gone the interior is gone except for a barely passable blue rear seat all the electrics are gone it does have a nice sunroof but no motor assembly - glass is good - the engine appears to be intact and it does spin - timing belt appears to be intact - so I wound up with the tranny, clutch pack and some odd and ends for $160 ...oh and a swollen hand

I didn't know it was a 5 spd, great deal on that. Have you checked it for LSD?

No relays puts a big hit on CE panel value, unless the yard charges for panel AND relays. $20 I would still pull and keep it, but add shipping and its not worth selling.

Hope the hand is OK, not an easy part to replace.

the numbers on the tranny are G28/11/12/11F so I believe it is a LSD - that makes the sore hand feel a little bit better - wish I found this about 3-4 weeks ago before I put the 79 trans in - I did drive it around the block - might have felt a little nicking going into second - needs to really be driven before I can make a determination - so for now this is a spare

Pretty solid general rule, they ALL need to be rebuilt, and the sooner after the synchros start to wear the fewer other parts that need to be replaced.
