Take another Ring off another Piston and check for marking indicating Top or UP
Compression Rings often have a Small circle indicating Up / or Top Oil Ring can go ether way 928 has siliconized Cylinder walls Porsche 928 V8 Nikasil Cylinder Treatment | Kuhn Performance As such the Rings fit tight and last a VERY Long time 200 / 300 K Miles often |

Yes, it matters...if you want it to be right. If you put it in the groove upside down, you could get excessive blowby, oil usage or worse case scenario...cylinder scuffing.
Look for some sort of marking that indicates top, circle or lazer mark. Brian. |
