What stereo did the '85 model cars come with?

-I've had this Pioneer pile of crap in my car for the past 5 years. I don't know why I went with another Pioneer stereo: the one that came in my car? When I literally RIPPED it from my dash in 2005... I felt the need to make a statement. It was before I bought my house, and I was living in an apartment on the third floor. I took it to the balcony, and threw it toward the parking lot! When I got down there one minute later, I took it to the dumpster and made a point of throwing it as hard as I could! I hated that thing. Oh-my-GOD that was satisfying!

And I hate this second Pioneer too. I have it hooked to my iPod, and it uses a Pioneer iPod bus, a device that is located in my cassette box along with the iPod itself. It works, but it is difficult to use. I have to pull over some times to change songs or playlists, because the link between the iPod and the stereo head is so slow that I literally cannot drive. THAT'S why I bought this system! So that I won't have some odd arm dangling in space in front of me, and showing my iPod to every thief that might think that a black Porsche 928 parked on the edge of the parking lot might have something of value inside. What's more, the 928 never came from the factory with some odd arm protruding from the dash.

[I've thought of this for years; If I had the power, the first thing I would change on the human body would be an extra pair of arms. 100 years from now when they can genetically engineer children, I bet you'll see this. Damn, I could really use an extra pair! If I was born that way, the only problem would be High School: people would probably call me a bug.]

But a strange arm protruding from the dash of my car? Sorry, it just isn't right, and I don't want to see it.

My solution is to move the Pioneer currently in my 928 to my Aerostar minivan. And I want to mount an ORIGINAL 1985 Porsche 928S2 stereo in my 928. I have one- a Blaupunkt Monterey SQR-23. I wil buy the XM adaptor, and pay them $15/ month

Only...

I'm not 100% sure that this was the stereo used in an original '85 928. The stereo depicted in the 1986 German language brochure I have shows a Blaupunkt Koln SQR-23. Yet, the 1985 version is listed as a Blaupunkt Monterey...

On a 944 stereo website.

My questions: 1. Does anyone know definitively WHICH stereo came from the factory? My car is an ROW or "Euro" car. 2. What is the difference between a Blaupunkt Monterey and a Blaupunkt Koln? My car has 8 speakers....but the Monterey has two speaker outputs on the back of the deck: 1 and 2!

Hello!

How does one hook this one up correctly?

Thanx in advance!

N

The Koln is a later edition than the Monterey; it has codes and bells and whistles and...Though they did have that name (Koln) used in"60s MBZ cars.

If you do happen to get the Koln (should be easier to find) I'll take the Monterey off your hands.

Thanks,
Jon

Your euro most likely came with this:

78-82: 928 552 270 04
83-95: 928 552 270 05 70B (911 552 463 02 70B) 70B is the color#

I have the original out of my 85 in a box in the basement. I'll go see what it is.

Okay it's the Blaupunkt Monterey SQR 23. if any one is interested in it let me know. I don't believe the cape deck works but I know the radio did before I removed it. the speeker plugs are in it but there doesn't appear to be the power plug.

My 85 Euro had a radio that looks the same, but with the name of a German city IIRC.

'85 Radio

My '85 has a Monterey SQR 23. Also had an 86 1/2 and it also has the SQR 23.

So now how the hell does this work: two speaker outputs from the head and 8 speakers. 4 speakers per wire? That doesn't make sense. Did this car come with an amplifier, and does anyone here have one?

Thanx!

N!

Porsche was stereo out of the head unit, with a front to back fader between it and the amplifier, that knob with a speaker symbol next to the seat. Amp was 4 channel.

Depending on the destination country and frequency bands used Blaupunkt had different model names for the same radio chassis.
Some countries - UK and Australia included had cars delivered with radio delete plates and had high end radios mounted locally by the dealer.

I'm trying to restore my 1980 model and have sourced a NOS period correct radio. I'm now looking for a 928 552 270 04 radio delete plate to fit the shaft mount radio into.
Pre '82 cars have the small hole so the face plate that comes with the radio wont work.

Hi!
If the Monterey is still available I'd like it very much. How much are you asking for it?

I installed a single DIN JVC DVD radio in my 928. The post is in here some place with picture. It almost looks like a stock radio because I actually put the Porsche Logo into the screen. The old radio had problems so I figured why put an outdated radio back in. This one has Bluetooth, DVD, USB input. The picture I had posted was not very good as I still had to protective plastic on the radio.
