Don't bet your car on this! Tow eye warning.
When winching the car onto a trailer (approx. 30 degree slope) this let go, sheered straight through, no additional weight on the car, brake off, lucky I was in it steering it .
A friend that knows more about metallurgy than I do (he doesn't need spellcheck to spell it ![]() Any expert advise? ![]() ![]()

Good thing mine has a coat of rust on it. It's good to hear that neither you or your car were hurt!

are you certain it hadn't been bent and then straightened?

not while I have owned it.
If these things are that fragile that they break that easy (previous bend or not- how much force would you have to put on it to bend it?) basically if you are not the original owner of the car, and know the complete history, throw it away and set up something that can be trusted. And even if you do know it's complete history, it's crap, throw it. don't rely on it for the purpose it was designed for. OK it's 34 years old, (but probably would not have got much use in that time span) it's a cheap casting, when will it let go? who knows? screwed both ways, difficult to get to the tie downs on the rails as the dam is in the way. and nothing else to get a grab on without destroying the dam. Not a one off either, a guy on rennlist has had the same thing happen.

I think your friend is wrong. Zinc plating is like .003 thick. It just goes in chemical tanks, there are not temperature extremes to make it brittle. It's merely a corrosion resistant coating. He may want to review some school books. It most likely broke because it was being pulled at an angle

It is also cast, not forged, meaning any lateral force like you applied was going to result in the same outcome.

Regardless , it is a piece of crap. Use at own risk, or, get it X rayed prior to use.(only way you will ever know, and then if it should be pulled at an angle it dislikes--Doom.)
Someone on rennlist pointed out that the later models had a different design/shape. Could old Ferdys boys have realised the weakness?

I agree they are horrible. You're lucky you got the end out. My car had the end of the eyelet still broken off flush in the hole from the PO. They make racing hooks for 944s that screw in like that that are really good. I'm not sure if it's the same thread size but if they are I'd look at some of those.

So yours is yet another one that has sheared off,
I was probably lucky getting the threaded bit out, there was so much much dirt in there, I had to give it a real good clean to get it screwed in to start with.. I don't know anybody that owns a 944 or I'd check it out. The thread is definitely a one off . need something as it is neer impossible to hook on anywhere else. I'll ask on the 944 forum and see if someone can post a pic'

The swivel loop looks like a better design. (but will the join be a ready made weak point?) Might ask an engineer that machined some splined half shafts for me to see if he can duplicate the thread onto something with strength.

It's forged steel. I bet you could lift the whole car up with that hook. It's made for pulling cars out of gravel traps and tires barriers, sometimes missing wheels. If you need more than that hook something much more serious has happened

Dropped in on engineering shop yesterday, no problem duplicating the thread, will be made in forged steel, spare time job, so will pick it up in a couple of weeks.
Strength will not be an issue, he makes half shafts for drag cars ( Have these in my 928,only cost $300 more than standard street use version, they will still be there, looking new when the car is a heap of ferrous oxide and alloy scrap) Problem with just buying the one you posted, Australian dollar is worth about two flat rocks, so $100 US becomes about $140. postage will get it past $170, Custom made one will cost about $100 Aust. Will post a pic when I pick it up.
