Searching for our Silver 928

Hello everyone... I am on a wild goose hunt and hoping someone may be able to help or lend a suggestion.

I'm trying to track down my fathers old car that I grew up in.

It was a Silver 928 Porsche, with all black leather int. sunroof, and 5spd. Pirelli P-Zeros on the corners.

It seems the majority have automatics, and funky checkered int.

Sadly he traded it in to Team Chevrolet in 1995, somewhere in Illinois.

It was an Illinois registered car until that time. Between 25-35K on the odometer. I'm digging around trying to find an old registration card so I can get the VIN # and the year, but no luck so far.

The Illinois plates were "WILLY 18" is there any way to search old license plates? it would have been registered to someone with the last name of Fletcher or Gregor.

This was an extremely well maintained car with low mileage, only the sunroof didn't work. The rest was mint inside and out.

I know its a long shot, but some how some way i will find this car.

Any suggestions on beginning to track it down?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

call your insurance company they usually have records of old cars that you insured so you can get a VIN

ask for declaration page. Most agents will email them rather quickly.

OTOH it might be a lot easier to find a silver 928 with black interior than one that matches the vin.

I'd think the production #s on a Silver/Black 5sp would be rather small.

the engine had four pipes on each side coming off the center, searching thru google that seems to be the 16V, but not sure if its the 4.7 or 4.5

so silver/black leather 5spd 16V sunroof car

Wheels were the 5 open ovals on each wheel.

It also had black trim around all the windows, front and back...I've noticed some have chrome or shiny trim. Does that narrow down a year at all?

Getting closer anyways. Thank you!

I would call the INS company but my father passed 10 years ago, so my info is rather limited.

All had black window trim from the factory, when it starts to wear some polish it to shiny. Silver was very common in early cars, sun roof not common until 83 then most were sun roof. 16v last year for USA was 84. Oval hole wheels are called phone dials, more common on early cars, and I am not sure when the transition to flat slotted wheel happened, 82/83 is my guess.

Do you recall a black rubber spoiler on the rear?

You don't have any pictures?

Being mint with 25k to 35k miles when traded to a Chevy dealer in 1995, won't have much bearing on the current condition.

If you found the exact car, matching VIN, and it needed say $50k to restore it to mint condition would that work for you? VS finding a random VIN that looked the same for about half that amount? Or would a basically similar car in average condition, what we call a daily driver, at closer to a quarter that amount work better?

thanks for the info!

There was no rear spoiler on the car

Those are all pretty smart questions to ask, and I guess I need to think about it. The actual car is certainly priceless to me, but may not even be an option at this point with what little info i have .

appreciate the response

Willy,
Did you try to get any numbers from the insurance company? Finding this particular car could be a daunting task, but will be less so with the VIN #.

Paint colors could be changed, but the VIN# is there to stay.

You might be able to try the Illinois Secretary of State if you had the VIN. Do you know where the car was purchased? I wonder if you can have them search by the plate number you have? Looks like a vanity number.

I do not have any idea where this car is, but If you do find out the VIN# or more details about it please let me know. I look all over for these cars as they pop up for sale and I can keep an eye out for you. I think it would be a great story to have you reunite with this car!!
